Title: New Server...again
Post by: Graham Lee on December 14, 2017, 05:04:42 PM
Balloon chat over the next couple of days will be heading over to a new server with 123 reg.
The reason for this is we have someone who thinks they can update the forum for us
so we want it on it's own designated server in case there is a mishap or two along the way.

So then fingers crossed we are hoping to freshen up the forum and finally get the
pictures automatically resized as they are on facebook so it's a lot easier to post.

Now I'm meant to tell people not to post as some posts will be deleted from
the time the server is backed up till it goes live on the new server.

Not sure there is any point asking people not to post as the forum at the moment
is very quiet, that I think is an understatement but we are hoping it might
pick up a bit once we re-vamp the forum.

A little update, the person working on the forum is looking to take the old
database and install it into a new software forum.

They are not sure if this is possible due to the phpbb that balloon chat runs on
having a fork extension that is called SEO.

In this instance the SEO is not search engine optimization but another add on.
If this does not work we do have someone lined up that will try to take
the forum back to just phpbb and take the SEO part off.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about then don't worry as I have no clue either.

We are hoping to have this all sorted by the 1st April which just so
happens to be the 10th anniversary of balloon chat starting up.

Perhaps I should not say anything but the old database has been downloaded from the forum
and they are trying to fit this into the new look forum. So fingers crossed.

All the extras that we have on balloonchat at the moment will go, the links page,
find a twister, the home page that all the files were lost when................
when I cant remember but they all got lost somewhere and it has not been updated for
years now. I'm sure we will add a front page but as to the rest, well time moves on
and things change.

When they move the forum, if they install it in a folder e.g. balloonchat.co.uk/forum/ you will be able to create a homepage and put other features back.

I'm sure the new template will have a few additions you can add but this time I'm
looking to keep it a little more simple so we do not have all the problems
trying to solve all the add on;s we had on the original site.

Still not sure if we are going to get a new site up and running yet.

Yep, it's difficult to find decent modifications that gets supported in the long term. I've just had it on our wordpress sites where I've had to change the contact form, total pain in the.......

Things are progressing and I have been told we are on for the new forum to go live on the 1st April.
Which is the tenth anniversary of balloon chat.

It will be moving over to a template called, Simple machines forum.

So fingers crossed all works out OK.

I was sent the basic front page today,
it has a feel of the balloon art wholesale website.

I was told so that we keep the corporate image the same,
that did make me smile.

We are not sure yet what will be staying and going from the old forum to the new.
The home front page will be going into an archive so that the info from the past
can be kept and looked at for later generations, that is what I have been told.

Did anyone spot the deliberate mistake,
well not a mistake but there was a slight problem with the pictures.

They were coming up incorrectly, instead of in number order 1, 2, 3 and 4
it was 4, 3, 2, and 1.

So the text and pictures were not matching, a little confusing on events page
but more difficult on the step by step instructions as you had to look
at the bottom picture first and work up the page.

Anyway all sorted now and in the correct order.
Thanks to Peter and Anja who have been working on the site.
