Yesterday I made a big ballerina.  I ended up with a sculpture i was happy enough with.  My client was happy with it too.
But I was wondering something.
I decided to get started and thought "Right where to start.....the shoes....work my way up!"
I didn't have any plans how I was going to do this.
So after a couple of rejected attempts of the shoe and leg I decided on the ones in the picture and then worked up from there, deciding not to join the legs but to have a link balloon between them to. So the rest of the sculpture evolved from that decision.  I was wondering what I would have ended up with if I had started from the head.  Everything would have been dictated by my decisions from that point and I would have ended up with a totally different piece.  Sometimes I sit and think about what I want and how I am going to make it and sometimes I just get the balloon out and see what comes out at the end.  Let the balloon guide me I suppose.  Well this isn't going anywhere. It was just a thought about how the start point of your model dictates what you end up with.

Yes, that's a good point, Thelma. I make a ballerina and start with the shoes.
A motorcycle is different if I start with the front wheel rather than the rear one.

I was always advised as an art student when drawing and painting to start with the eyes, I know you cant often do that with balloons however I do usually start with the head and work my was around from there. I have started with the feet a few times before and sometimes with other parts of the body but it is usually the head.
