Balloon Review 020 - KNIGHTS PRINCESSES FAIRIES & STUFF DVD BY ASI COHEN

It's been a while since my last review so I closed my eyes and selected a DVD from random off my shelf. This DVD comprises of 12 designs by Asi Cohen. This DVD is available from http://www.aeradecovideo.com - I managed to buy this in a recent sale but the usual price is $45 (US Dollars) - a higher priced DVD so hopefully there is something decent on here.

Before reviewing the individual models I would say this DVD is not ideal for a complete beginner despite the DVD cover saying it is suitable for all skill levels. The reason I say this is because some of the instructions are a little unclear. Rarely is the viewer told the size of the uninflated portion of the balloon and I had to pause the DVD just to see each balloon. The lack of balloon close ups makes following some of the designs difficult and confusing and I relied more on just the audio to follow along. The balloon sizes are measured in fingers (mostly) and requires quite a lot of estimation. This was a little disappointing given the price (including shipping to the UK from the USA) but I felt it important to warn you.

KNIGHT'S HELMET

This medieval knight's helmet is very effective and the front guard covering the mouth can be lifted up and down. It sits really well on a child's face. Too long for line work but great for a themed children's party or restaurant work. The original design uses silver balloons but can be easily swapped to grey balloons.

SWORD

Only a minor improvement from a basic sword. This one has more intricate handles. I was expecting something a little more advanced. If you would like a nice sword and shield check out TBAG Vol 2 DVD. Dennis Hogers makes a fantastic sword. As for this one I don't think I will be making it again.

Benjamin

Sword isnt that great but i do love the helmet
"At the touch of her lips, it grew long and swollen. I gasped as she squeezed and pulled expertly. It was the best balloon giraffe I\'d seen."

SHIELD

This shield is made from 350s. Quick to make and large in size. It wouldn't take too much effort to make it more coloured or interesting but this balloon is what it says it is.... a shield!

PRINCESS

I love this princess for one reason and that's the hair. The hair is made from a 160Q. The hair piece or 'balloon wig' is made separately. The uninflated 5" round balloon is inserted inside the hair and then inflated to form the face. I've had so much fun pulling the 'wig' off the top of my princess to leave her bald! You could make a collection of different hair pieces and then interchange them whenever you like. Very sad I know but great fun.

PRINCESS HAT

A nice hat using a combination of two colours. I am not sure this is really a princess hat as it stands very tall but even so it is a competent design.

WIZARD HAT

I think this is supposed to be that hat from Harry Potter. This hat is made with a very loose weave. It's a large hat and looks OK. The DVD instructions could be clearer and i had to improvise a little. Probably not one I will be making again.

FAIRY HAT

Not sure why this is called a fairy hat but even so this model is quite a nice flower hat. Fairly quick to make and a nice use of colours. Probably a little long for line work.

Anna

Hallo Nippy,
I recently get this DVD by Asi Cohen but  didn't have the time to go through it yet so many thanks for this review, it is quite helpful and time saving. I now know in advance what I'm going to pick up...
Best regards  :D

Hi Anna

I am pleased you find it helpful. I still have a few more designs to make but hopefully will be finished tonight.

Take care

DRAGON HAT

A really nice dragon hat. The face is a good design and I especially like how the top set of teeth help secure the facial structure. Very effective and can be easily adapted to make other dragon/dinosaur type monsters.

EAGLE
Having recently been inspired by the bird work of Patrick Van Der Ven, this eagle is a little disappointing. Although this is easy to make and is a competent balloon it is still not a favourite of mine.

UNICORN

This unicorn hat really doesn't look right to me. Perhaps I haven't made it exactly like the original but the head design could do with being a little tighter. A hat design that can be adapted to make a horse or donkey. It has potential but needs a little work.

WIZARD WAND

This is a very quick wizard wand using a three balloon spiral and a 5" balloon on top. Fast to make but really not my thing at all.
