Balloon Review 098 - Shirley Ray Volume 3 DVD

Available from Balloon Parade priced £35 - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/balloonparade/

When I first started balloon modelling by first step beyond the basic 260Q single balloon models was the work of Shirley. I absolutely love her designs and have used them extensively in my professional work. Some of the designs on this DVD now look a little dated but even so there are still some gems to be discovered.

As before, Shirley's instructions are first rate. All sizes are given in finger lengths and her explanations are easy to follow. The DVD quality is good and each model can be accessed via the front menu.

Let's see what we have here....

SPIDERHERO

A very quick and simple super hero design perfect for line work when you have a little more time. Easily adapted for any superhero (just change the colours). You can make the artwork as simple or as complicated as you like. Shirley has her spiderman hanging from a web but didn't bother.

PENGUIN

This design is for clipping onto the edge of a cocktail glass or other display. The beak is novel in that if is the tip of an uninflated orange pushed over the tip of the white balloon. An interesting concept to play with.

BUTTERFLY

There are so many butterfly designs around but this one is really nice. The three tone colour wings are great and the body design ensures the wings are held in tension and do not move. Perfect as a bracelet or a headband.

CROCODILE

This design is very dated and not very good at all. There are much better crocodiles now available and this one isn't very convincing. Not for me.

ONE BALLOON BAT

A very quick balloon bat using just one balloon. Sizing needs to be exact and artwork added to make it look like a bat but this one may be handy for line work at Halloween.

HOBBY HORSE

A fun hobby horse that the girls love to run around with. This one can be simplified for line work and I do find that interactive balloons are enjoyed more by customers. It's a lot quicker to make this rather than mess around making the horse's body and feet.

GOOSE

There have been many swan/goose designs over the years. The difference here is with the wing design. The way they are tucked into the main body gives a nice shape. Everything else here is pretty much standard.

#8
RABBIT

The perfect small and quick rabbit using a single balloon for line work. Sizing is critical here and the 260Q needs to be very soft and very well stretched. This one is a little frustrating to start with as you are likely to run out of balloon! Worth a look for a quick rabbit.

GOLD ROBOT

I guess this may be a star wars character parody. It looks OK but does need some artwork to really bring out the character. Easy to make - nothing difficult here.

LITTLE BALLOON GIRL

This is Boo from the movie Monsters Inc. When this DVD first came out I made many of these balloons for birthday parties. The popularity has dwindled since but Shirley's design is very easy to follow and can be adapted for any cartoon female characters. As with many of Shirley's designs artwork is key, and here is no exception. I haven't made this one for many years but it was great at the time.

BIG BLUE MONSTER

This is Mikey from Monsters Inc. Made from 350Qs the end result is a good size. I am not too sure about the face shape but it is instantly recognisable. Needs quite a bit of sharpie work on the fur. Still one of the best Mikey's for which I have seen published instructions.

SPACEMAN

If this was the only design on this DVD, it would still be worth the price of admission! This spaceman has stood the test of time and is one I have made regularly over the years. Very popular for birthday parties. Mix this with David Brenion's Buzz backpack and you will leave a massive impression with your audience. Made mostly of 350Qs this one stands tall. I can make this now in under 10mins. The first time will take a while!

Simply incredible.

If you haven't got this design then buy Shirley's DVD!

BALLET DANCER

A fairly good ballet dancer. The ballet costume doesn't sit too well across the shoulders and the hair design is a little dated. It is passable but there are other dancer designs around.

This DVD is now a little old but there are many designs that are still worth a look. Shirley is a wonderful teacher and I wish she would bring out a new collection.

Highly recommended.
