Balloon Review 136 : Restaurant Repertoire Vol 1 by Roger Godin

Available from http://www.magicshop.co.uk/p10464/Resta ... Godin__DVD (http://www.magicshop.co.uk/p10464/Restaurant_Repertoire_1_by_Roger_Godin__DVD) at £14.99

The first in a series of DVDs by Roger Godin for balloons suitable for restaurants but equally usable for line work. This DVD is available for a bargain price. To start I can say the DVD is well made. Good quality video and audio. Roger explains the designs well, bubble sizes are quoted and the camera zooms in at the right times. All designs are accessible via a menu. So far so good... let's see what we have here.

DOG

This dog is the same design shown on one of Roger's other DVDs Sizes Does Matter but this is a smaller version instead. So if you have one of those DVDs then you should already be able to make this. The dog's head and body are made in two separate sections and then joined together. The end result is good but as the head is top heavy then it will not stand up on its own.

Perfect for restaurants and for this lines where you have a little more time.

GIRAFFE

A giraffe made of 350Qs. A standard design but I do not really like the nose. It looks a little odd. Even a 5" inch round as the nose would make it a better design. Fairly quick to make and I drew on brown patches!

BALLOON BRAID HAT No 1

This design uses a 3 balloon braid for the base with 260Qs being inserted into the gaps to make a rainbow. Sadly my braid wasn't long enough so i have less parts to my rainbow than the one show on the DVD. To me this design has no use. I am not sure anyone will want to just carry a rainbow on its own and it would have made more sense to make this into some form of hat. A nice way to hold 260Qs in a braid but not one for me.

BALLOON BRAID HAT No 2

This design uses two braids. I found if the braids are woven tight and under pressure then they will curve naturally so when joined together make a lovely heart shape. My version needs to be shaped a little more but this is very quick to make and I can see this being popular.

BALLOON BRAID HAT No 3

A simple balloon hat base using a single 260Q is transformed by adding a braid across the top. A really fast and impressive hat - perfect for line work.

PRINCESS

A fairly standard princess design which is quick enough to make for line work. The use of a 350Q for her dress makes it look more impressive than it really is. An endless number of designs just by changing the colours.

ALIEN

OK i have chosen the completely wrong colours for an alien but it gives you some idea about this design. As the entire body is made of just two 260Qs which replicate each other makes this very quick and easy. An optional ray gun and antennae on top of the helmet can be added if you have the time.

This reminds a little of some Ken Stillman / Ed Chee designs.

HERO

A variation of the spaceman - not a great deal of difference but this one is simpler and faster to make. Not really my thing!

MERMAID

A small mermaid design that is a little time consuming. I prefer Buster Balloon's large mermaid which can be made faster and looks more impressive.

The hair looks a little different on this model Darren, have you a picture face on?

Sadly not Graham - the mermaid wouldn't stand up and now is feeling very deflated...

SWORD AND SHIELD

A fairly standard sword and shield. As the shield uses 350Qs the end result is sturdy and chunky. The shield has a handle on the back for the recipient to hold. Perfect for line work.

CROWN AND SCEPTRE

A nice quick to make crown. Looks impressive. The group of 3 bubbles on top of the left and right stems sometimes untwist. Accompanied with a short sceptre.

ARMADILLO

An interesting concept of using multiple loops for the shell but this doesn't really work for me. The body is too arched and it simply doesn't look right.

RAY GUN

A quick and easy ray gun - the end result isn't that great and I prefer to make my ray guns from a single balloon.

MOTORCYCLE

A single balloon motorcycle. I have to be honest due to incorrect sizing I didn't manage just one balloon. For restaurant work I would recommend one of Graham's motorcycles that uses two balloons - adds so much colour and more impressive.
