Events. Balloon, Magic, Etc / Spring Fair
February 09, 2011, 09:41:44 AM
Lyn and I drove up for the sping fair yesterday and had a nice time chatting with Leo who was over, Qualatex and Oaktree, also met up with Pam and Paul and it's always nice to listen to Pam  :D
Stayed at Thelma's who has just done us an omlette breakfast which was very nice, back off to walk around some more halls at the spring fair then off to see Pam & Paul's lockup for the big sculpture day later on and possibly going for the bargain £3.99 carvery. Will take a few pictures of the balloon stands and post up tomorrow.

Balloon Chit Chat / Balloon History
February 02, 2011, 11:54:52 PM
Following on from his lecture at The Millennium Jam last year Ralph Dewey has been building up the history of our balloon art,
Ralph emailed this over to me and has said it was Ok to post onto the forum;

Hello History Buffs,
I've just purchased a very rare A.C. Gilbert Toy Balloon Kit (#600) made in 1931.  This has been the one significant item that my balloon history collection has been lacking.  The A.C. Gilbert company was ahead of their time when they produced the kit.  It was in 1931 when Neil Tillotson began dipping balloon molds in liquid latex.  He claimed to be the first to do that, but I've received information that Neil wasn't the very first to do so.  The A.C. Gilbert company also made another toy balloon kit which contained some Tinker Toy pieces.  I've not had a chance to examine the other kit to see the difference in the two kits.  I've only seen photos of it.
See the attached photos.

I have just booked Tom "Bibo" Saeys for the Bristol Care and Share day on Monday 9th May, Tom will be taking the full day and will be lecturing on either;
Performing with balloons?
Entertaining with balloons?
Boring people to death with balloons???  :D

He is an excellent entertainer and works world wide, this is his website, http://www.tomsaeys.be/Site_NL/welkom.html
This is one of his youtube clips;  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX7AJVlLSHk
Will work out costings for the day and put booking details on the website tomorrow, no doubt with an early bird special.
If anyone is thinking of coming along to the day there is a magic convention taking place in Weston Super Mare on the Sunday 8th May that you may like to attend as well.

Balloon Chit Chat / Model of the month thread
January 16, 2011, 12:23:42 PM
I have decided to end the series of model of the month, there will be three more taking us up to March when the forum will be three years old.
This months challenge is either a basic bike or butterfly; january-model-the-month-bike-butterfly-t3667.html
There will be 36 models in this section by then, thanks to those that have helped with their own designs, Tonya, Dennis, Martin and Kenny.
Just checking through and I need to add the instructions for the Taz (July) and Skeleton Feet (December)
I'm hoping that Kenny, Dune buggy and Martin, Princess could also add the instructions so that we have them all sorted by the end of March, thanks.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the thread but it is quite time consuming and each month it seems that less and less join in and coming up with new designs is not a strong point for me. Phoenix put the thread on about a model a day so I plunged in with a model of the week as I would not get enough time for one a day. The plan is to go back to some of the early Video and DVD's from my collection and to put an original model on from video/DVD with no instructions and then to put an updated/variation that could hopefully be used in the real world as my passion is for entertaining and making models for this kind of situation. I love all the technical, complicated sculptures that are used mainly for conventions and one off show off pieces but feel there is a need to take a step back and go back to basics for the real world.
The thread on 52 one a week; thread-one-week-t3613.html?hilit=52

There is a choice this month of either the basic bike or butterfly, which ever gets the most attemps I will write up the instructions.
The butterflies were in my original set of lecture notes from years ago, possibly 6/7, time goes so fast especially when you are enjoying yourself  ;)

Balloon Chit Chat / Apollo Balloon Cart
January 12, 2011, 10:31:11 PM
I've been planning on having built a mobile balloon inflator and balloon holder to wizz around venues so that I'm not having to carry an apron or busking bag around and then this comes up.
Very similar to what I was looking to have made, the bonus being all the balloons can just be thrown in the clear pockets and not laid out and sorted like the bags/aprons.

Balloon Chit Chat / David Brenion UK Lecture
January 12, 2011, 07:14:01 PM
I have the chance of getting over to the UK David Brenion, Mr Dave Twister, 3 Ring, nifty balloons, his website;  http://www.niftyballoons.com/ and portfolio; http://mrdave.balloonhq.com/
He does go under a few names but is a very talented twister and was at TMJ in November and will be in Paris on the 11th April so could come over to the UK for the day I have already got planned in Banstead on the 13th April.
Looking to see if there is demand as in the past when I have brought people over from the US the turn out has been low and we do need to cover our expenses on the trip.
Cost wise depends on how many we get through the door but at £25 a head I would need 30 people to book for the day just to cover the expenses.

Balloon Chit Chat / Most users online
January 10, 2011, 11:10:05 AM
I just noticed that last night we had the most ever users online at any one time 48, not sure what the previous best was.
Up till Dec the figures were regularly hiting 2500 unique visitors a month with 8500 hits a month, this has dipped in December/holiday season but was expected as many entertainers are out working.
