August Competition (Pikachu)
« on: July 31, 2016, 04:27:38 PM »
Well for the first time in ages I have tried to make a design that would be usable for line work.
It's two balloons and a scrap of black.

I tried a few design variations out trying to come up with a workable design that went together easily.
There are other Pikachu's here on this thread, pokemon-t10687.html

And Scott Tripp has posted a design here as well, pokemon-balloons-t10703.html

So please have a go just for fun or for those that do purchase balloons from us in August we will send
out a complimentary pack of balloons with all you need to make the design.
If you post it onto the forum you will go into the hat at the end of the month to win a balloon modelling DVD.

Good luck.

I have just done all the picture instructions earlier this afternoon but was un happy with how I made the face section.
I was looking for quick and easy so after doing the first lot of pictures I have just done version two.
So I have done a last minute alteration and much happier now.

I like the fact the ears can be together or separate on the head design and not attached to pinch twists either
side of the head that changes the look of pikachu for me

This is what will come with the balloon orders.

Here we go with the instructions then, this one can definitely be used for line work and I did make the design at an event
I was working at this weekend just gone. I rather like the way the body, head and ears all attach to each other though.

Inflate the first 260 yellow and leave approx. 6 fingers un-inflated.
We will start with the body which is very similar to a teddy bear body.

Make two 4 finger bubbles followed by a 1 finger pinch twist.

For the picture I have tied the twists together to take the picture,
when you make it the twist joints will not look as bulky.

Make another two 4 finger bubbles

You then need another 1 finger pinch twist and attach the nozzle securely around this pinch twist.

Then make a 5/6 finger bubble for the body up to the other pinch twist.

There will be three of these at the back and one at the front.

You might need to experiment with the length of the body bubbles.

Make another 5/6 finger bubble at the back, another 5/6 finger bubble at the front and
thenthe last 5/6 finger bubble at the back, this makes for a fuller Pikachu body,
all these bubbles get twisted into the top and bottom pinch twists.

Shape the tail with a shock twist, the size of tail will vary depending on the 5/6 finger bubble body size.
My tail was approx. 8/10 fingers.

Inflate the next 260 yellow to just over half way, part of this will be cut off and re-inflated for the ears.
The face is made up from a four bubble roll through, three of the bubbles are between 5/6 fingers long.

Make two bubbles and tie the knot around the second twist very securely.
Then make the third 5/6 finger bubble.

Then twist the lower mouth section which is a 6/7 finger bubble.
Tie the ends securely together and cut off the excess 260 or use another balloon.

I prefer to have a knot at both ends of the ears for symmetry.

I had approx an 8 finger section left, inflate to 12 fingers long with a good I finger un-inflated.

Split the ear bubble into two equal sections and twist both ears at the same time to get the
rope effect in the centre. This will be put into the top section of the head and pulled down over
the top pinch twist of the body, wrap this un-inflated section around the pinch twist a couple of times.

The black balloon was just to show the centre section of the ears passing through the head for the photo.
The larger face bubble is at the lower face section.

Then pull the ears up so the top of the body and bottom of face are a snug fit.
You will have to put the top pinch twist to the back of the head and pull the
back head section over the pinch twist for it all to sit snugly.

Inflate a small 1 finger bubble from the black 160 for the nose,
tie loosely so you keep the rounded nose look, too tight and the nose will look like a pinch twist.
Leave a little excess on the nose so you can pull this through the centre of the head section and around the top body pinch twist.

Add the artwork and shape the ears, you can add black to all the top of both ear sections but this takes time.
Just a triangle section has the desired effect.

With the ears fitting like this you can have them together in the centre of the head or move apart so
there is a slight gap which is more Pikachu style.

I also upsized this and made with 260's and 350's and it worked out OK.

Anyway hope it helps, I look forward to seeing a few models posted.

EDIT,

Just to try and make it a little clearer on the way the ears attach through the head design onto the
pinch twist on the top of the body. I prefer to twist the centre of the ear section as described above in the instructions.
The problem with that is it makes the excess balloon shorter and a little more difficult to make the connection point.
The benefit is the air stays in each balloon where as if you make it the same as this picture the air could move from ear to ear.

Both ears are a six finger bubble, in the picture there is a two finger un-inflated section.
Thread this through the top of the head, get hold at the nose section and then move down
to the bottom of the head section, attach onto the top of the body pinch twist securely by
twisting the middle section around the pinch twist a few times.
Then pull the ears back up at the top of the head so they sit nicely and the face sits over the pinch twist.

Hope that helps?

my attempt (picture taken at wrong angle, can't see the tail; and I think the ears are too long...)
