Balloon Tutorial & Help / Re: Work jacket and hammer
April 11, 2016, 10:39:19 PM
Dear Audrey,

Did the caretaker have any distinguishing features that you could build on to make a balloon likeness of him ?

This may sound more complicated, but might actually turn out easier in the long run.

I made a Bob the Builder with a tool belt holding a hammer and screwdriver. The belt was a mocha 160, with simple loops at each side to hold the 160 tools. the head of the hammer was tulip twisted for a flat face. The screwdriver blade was a 260, with a puff of air in, and a tiny tiny poodle tail at the end.

The beardy character is Stormy Sam, the R.N.L.I. mascot. His lifejacket is very similar to a high vis jacket, so combining the jacket, with the tool belt twisted into the pinch twists at the bottom of the jacket may work.

Graham has qualatex neons for the high vis part. orange or green would seem the best, and you can buy just 10 to save investing in a full bag.

Very nice. Love what you do.

I really enjoy seeing your sculptures, and love the subjects you choose ...... We must both watch the same sort of movies  :D

I remember your "Chuckie" from a while ago. I am working on him at the moment, but not sure whether to do him with a slashed face or not. Will keep you informed !

Anyway, thank you for posting, and keep up the great work  :D  :D

Hi Acecaz,

Like Graham, I am not much of a decorator, my main experience of weddings is making bride and grooms (of all sizes from table top to life size) and twisting at the reception, although I have made a few columns.

There are a lot of ideas on google images for décor, and for table décor, one thing I learnt from Roger is that if you rest your elbow on the table, and then rest your chin on your hand, this will give you an idea of the height to aim for.

Wedding guests at the tables with their heads at this height will want to talk to each other, and see each other across the table, so the main bulk of the design should be either higher or lower than this, or the décor will just be put on the floor or taken away.

Also yes, always use the best balloons, either Qualatex or Sempertex (Bellatex) especially if it is for your son  :D  :D

The main difference between the two is the shape. The yellow one here is Sempertex, the pink one Qualatex.

And as Graham says ......... have fun. I'm sure it will be a fabulous day  :D  :D  :D  :D

The big bunny was a great attraction at a local pub over the Easter weekend. It was a great photo attraction, got good business for lunches at the pub, and was also good advertising for me.

The bear with bunny ears was made for a museum on Portland, an isle near where I live. It is a very strange place, with a lot of superstition and history about it. If anyone has seen the film "The Wicker Man" ( the original with Edward Woodwood and Christopher Lee, not the awful remake) that is what it is like  :o

You cannot mention rabbits or bunnies on the island as they are bad luck, because their burrows have been associated with quarry accidents and deaths from collapsed mines in the Portland stone industry. They are known as "Hoppity Things" or when eaten during meat rationing in the war years  "Underground Mutton"

That is why it had to be a bear with big ears  :D

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed that bit of Dorset fokelore ......have a very happy Easter !

Ooops ...... forgot about posting the finished pic.

This is how he turned out, but I'm not too happy about the tricycle. I thought it shouldn't be too difficult to get the front forks lined up with the handlebars, and his feet on the peddles in the centre of the wheel where they should be, but boy was I wrong .... what a nightmare

Anyway, here is my compromise. Not a success, but hey ho, the overall effect looks ok

Balloon Tutorial & Help / Re: can't tell a colour
March 02, 2016, 08:23:56 PM
Hi Jay.... I feel your frustration !!!

I am guessing that you have the Qualatex Traditional selection, which look great in the catalogue, but as you are finding, it is really difficult to tell the dark colours, and when blown up, most of the colours are the "see through" type.

The nicest selections are the tropical, or carnival mixes, which give a good selection of bright solid colours, and the character mix is good if you are going to do people.

Try those when you next order, and you will get a feel for the colours, and hopefully things will get busy for you in the Summer and you will have found the colours you like Then you can order those colours in bags of 100.

Good luck  :D

A slight change in the construction to make it hold together , and he doesn't look too bad, although the jaw/chin may be a bit too long.

I will finish him tomorrow.
