PLI and CRB
« on: March 17, 2013, 12:14:57 PM »
Hi all

I found a thread dated 2010 talking about the need of Public Liability and CRB checks.  I also noticed it did say it was not a legal requirement.

Does anyone know if that comment was relating to this country and/ or how you'd go about getting CRB and Public Liability Insurance?  How long they are valid for and how much they cost?

Thanks

Helen.

As far as I am aware they are still not legal requirements but a lot of places such as schools, playgroups and shopping centres request that you have them.

My Public Liability insurance is provided by Equity and is worth every penny, it costs from about £100 a year I think, I cant remember but the website should let you know - http://http://www.equity.org.uk

As for CRB checks, I am unsure how these are gained, I get mine through my agent, I renew it every year although I am told that they are not valid for any set amount time, I think the problem is that the moment you get a CRB check done it becomes out of date as it only covers the time up until the date the check was done. I am not sure how much this costs.

Have you looked at this page? - http://https://www.gov.uk/disclosure-barring-service-check/overview

Hope this helps

Generally I find no one has a clue about CRB, you are unable to get this yourself in England, a company needs to apply for you but you can get a disclosure for Scotland which is the same thing, is legal in England and when I got mine was approx £22. For PLI I use equity as they offer legal service as well for the same price. If you hit the search button I'm sure there are a few threads on this topic already.
Hope that helps?

PLU i get via Equity.

As for CRB checks, I have an enhanced CRB due to me working with the hospital. However, in my 14 years of performing I have only every once been asked for one and that funnily enough was by the matron on the Children's Ward.

A CRB check just means you haven't be caught yet and is no guarantee.

CRB is no longer valid. You need a DBS now.

http://http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/agencies-public-bodies/dbs/
They last a year and you cannot get one done for yourself they have to be through your employer, or the person that wants to hire.

Thanks - I'll check out those websites.

@ magirob - who is your agent?  How do you get hold of one of those and how do you pick a kosher one?   Looks like I have to be with an agent to get the Equity thing and would they be able to get the DBS done?

HelenM,
you don't need an agent to join Equity.

Just head over to their website to see how to join...

I still think that as entertainers we still fuss too much about the whole CRB/eCRB and DBS thing. How many jobs has anyone miss out on because you don't have one? And as Danny says, for DBS it is the person booking you who needs to apply for one and who is really going to be bothered about that.

There are a fair few jobs I DO which require me to have a CRB/DBS, I need one to do the cruise ships and various schools and Playgroups so for me it is important to have one.

Helen, my agent is a friend of mine who has been my agent for many years now. To be honest I am not sure how they deal with the CRB/DBS thing.

You do not need an agent to join Equity.

I am in scotland and as graham says , disclosure scotland, this is been changing, and any new person now gets a PVG ( protection for vulnable groups ), this covers all - children, old and disabled groups, anyone whom may require protection due to vulnerbility, not sure if legally required, but better to have , i believe you can get it done yourself if you are self employed. not sure if this also covers England, as ment to be a stanardised scheme.
re -public liability, can i suggest check out BAPIA, www,bapia.com. pay monthly or yearly. you get incuded in membership, 5 Million public liability, 5 million product liability, and cover for up to 10 employees, plus more benifits.

Alistair..

If you live and work in England you need English DBS, not the Scottish equivalent.

If you are a balloon twister or childrens entertainer you should go to Equity they have £10million cover and are more geared to the entertainer.
BAPIA are excellent if you are more of a decorator/ shop/ stall.

Rob are you left alone with the children? If not then you do not require a CRB.
I expect the agent, cruise line etc feel better that you have one but you only need one if left alone with children.

BAPIA membership includes Public, Products & Employers liability cover as well as Legal insurance cover and you will also receive a 'welcome pack' and I know that those who have received this have been very pleased with.  You will also get a listing on the public search facility of the website, if you'd like more information e-mail  info@bapiaonline.com  :)

No Graham, I have never been left alone with the kids and I would never want to be, it is a requirement of the cruise line that kids entertainers are checked.
