Quote from: "Graham Lee"Seems a very big picture & poor quality,
no doubt someone will tell me where I'm going wrong?

Oooh. my favorite part....
Start by telling what program you used and the size of the original. Looking at the text below the pic., it looks like you did the process 3 times.
First, what program did you use
Second, size of the original
Third, describe what you did

Do you want to do it here or make a seperate thread?

Wim,
I've put all these posts about the pictures into a new thread.
The original picture was 100KB? Whatever that is.
I downloaded the programme you suggested above & followed the instructions.
It made a seperate picture in the same folder on my computer.

Graham, I just received your picture and I thought it would be useful for others to place it on the forum.
The picture I received was 100kb and 640x480 pixels.
The program you used resized it to the size you asked it to do, in this case 800x600. So it made it bigger. Since the original picture quality is not great (if you look at the original you already see some blur) but if you enlarge that then the quality goes down the drain.

A picture has two major factors, the size (in your case 100kb) and the size in pixels.
In general is a bigger pixel size also a bigger kb size. The kb size is also determent by the number of colors on the pictures, the objects on it and the compression factor.
Example, a picture of 1300x1300 pixels from a green wall is 1000kb. If you put a child for that wall, the size will be bigger (not the pixel size but the kb's) and if you put a wall painting on it it would grow again.

What important is to know is that quality goes down when you make the picture larger then the original.
Another thing is that when you need to stay below a limit (the avatar has a 15 kb limit and 90x90 pixels) you can do that in this order:
1 resize the image to 90x90 pixels
2 still to large, then reduce the number of colors (256000 colors still gives a good picture)
3 still to large? then make the compression factor higher. The show it as a bar which measures the quality of the picture, 10 is the best, 1 the worst. If you slide the bar down the compression factor becomes higher.

How do I know the original pixel size of your picture is also nice to know, I use Irfanview, a freeware program. //http://www.irfanview.net/
If you use that to show the picture and you press the information button (i) then you see everything there is to see about the picture. Irfanview can also be used to resize the picture but that other program is simpler to use.

I have my picture up :D  :D
although I did manage to get it under the 15kb. The actual pixel size was too big so I had to send it to
Wim (the man of many talents) who sized it correctly.
I have managed to download the two programmes Wim suggests will help with putting pictures up.
With me It's a very slow learning process, but if I can do it then anyone can.

I seem to have hit a problem with posting pics on here - something that I can normally cope with!

I've posted a few pics with no trouble at all but today I tried to post one and although the total pixel size fitted was OK apparently the ratio to width and height wasn't right.

Now I have a folder of pics; loads of them especially resized for posting on forums and for emailing etc and I have used them on loads of forums with no problem, but today on this forum it said i couldn't use the pics I wanted to post.

Any idea why this is - the pics are suitably re-sized for every other forum but for some reason on this one they don't seem to be right - i really don't want to have to set about re-sizing my already resized pics all over again!!!!

I didn't really find a solution to it Mandy short of re-resizing, now when I take new pics I just resize them extra small to make sure that I can fit them on here... let me know if you have any other success!

Mandy,

What problems are you still having?
I resize my pictures to 350. The programme I use is Irfanview 4.10
This is the link to download it; http://www.irfanview.net/
Wim recommended it to me in the above posts.

Mandy,
This may well be like the blind leading the blind here, my knowledge of computers is very small but I did struggle on & got there in the end with loading pictures.
If you read all of these posts in this section Wim mentions another re-size programme that may be easier for you; http://adionsoft.net/fastimageresize/
Do you upload pictures onto other sites? How did you get the footballers on here or did I put them on?
