Not sure how often we will do the challenge, it might be weekly,
fortnightly or monthly depending on how busy we are.
You are more than welcome to join in the challenge that we set.
I had a challenge set me the other week by Danielle.
To make a cat design that was made by Masayoshi Matsumoto
This is his facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/masayoshi.matsumoto.5
Now its not often I make others designs but thought we would give it a go.
It did actually make up a variation on a theme as well.
The cat below was made by Masayoshi Matsumoto and this is the one we went by.
So this was my variation.
Then I had a play with the face design for the Cat and Mouse.
I enjoyed making this....looks easy but really isn't :o
I love the work created by masayoshi matsumoto.
Here is my version. I would love to see others try this...
It was my turn to set the challenge for this week.
So went with a design I saw posted in the hairband
competition at twist and shout this year by Anthony Lena.
This is his facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/anthony.lena.3
And this was his VW hair band design.
I went for a variation on a theme.
Here is my version of the VW
As you can see in the first pic it still resembles a car...in the second I changed windows and positioned more upright on headband looks better....but still a bit car like.
But I like it.
This is made with 3 hearts.
I tried with the hearts, its interesting to see the different looks you get.
I tried with chrome edging for windows and then added chrome for
wing mirrors as I though the cat looked a little Oompa Loompa.
Here we go for another challenge...this time Snoopy.
The original pic from artist XCMMagicman is the last one.
The first and second one are mine.
The helmet was the biggest complication really on where to attach the side wall bubble of the heart.
I had a go at making this today, will get pictures tomorrow and post.
This is xcmmagicman YouTube for the Snoopy, he does not explain or make it.
He just talks about the design.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQiIDQQpiXw
I think I need to add eyes lower down on face.
The goggles are more on top of hat and not being
used as they are, plus possibly a mouth as well.
I made using 15" hearts and 6" heart.
I added eyes and mouth.
I had a quick go at one of the iconic pictures of snoopy.
I had another go at the mouse that I made in the earlier challenge.
So it was my challenge this time around. As we had done snoopy
I went for Charlie Brown from the Twisted Inflations website.
https://www.twistedinflations.ca/
My attempt, I used an 11" round to start and the shape of head was wrong.
Then went for a 16" which formed a more rounded head shape.
The ears were wrong on first picture, then a bolder mouth and eyes.
Charlie and Snoopy.
I really liked making this Charlie Brown...and he makes me smile every time I walk past him.
It was good to try out different raisen twists.
I'm very happy how he turned out.....the pattern on jumper needs to be less inflated though.
😊
For my next challenge I wanted to do artist Naos Mickey Mouse. I love the chunky head and feet.
He has made many variations on Mickey but I like this one.
This is Nao Osaka's Facebook page if anyone would like to take a look,
https://www.facebook.com/balloon.twist
and his website is, http://www.twistballoon.com/
and on BalloonHQ, https://balloonhq.com/column/dewey/mar14/
Well...this was a challenge indeed!
I remade head twice and still nowhere near as cute as Nao's.
Plus the shoes were second attempt too.
I decided to make Mickey in black and white for a retro look.
I enjoyed this one, I think I have enjoyed them all to be honest.
At first I was not keen but it's an interesting concept trying to
re-create a design from someone else.
Trying to make it look exactly the same.
Although I do steer off on occasions, this was my first attempt.
I liked the retro look and made version two.
Changed retro Mickey lower jaw into a 260.
This was the challenge we set ourselves. The picture is from TwisTee.
This is her Instagram account, https://www.instagram.com/balloontwistee/?hl=en
Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/Kaiumporn.P
I made a variation on a theme, I was curious about the head/hair structure.
Plus with a little artwork.
I tried making her with a 12 inch round for the head...Graham didn't use a 12 inch....but I Definately prefer it made without the 12inch blush.
Plus the teddy was quite technical mine needs tweaking 😀
I then had another go at making the design but it
looked more male like so went with it.
As Danielle made the teddy I thought I should give it a go.
It was a little tricky getting the head shape.
I was not too keen on these challenges at first, making others designs.
But have to say its turned out very interesting trying to re create or
make a variation on a theme.
I see that Dumbo was at the cinema and fancied making it as I had not seen many balloon designs of Dumbo.
So I googled and found this one but can not find who made it.
If you know please let me know thank you.
I came up with two pages on instagram where the picture was posted.
Both seemed to be party planner pages and that was as far as I got.
I then spoke with Rob Driscoll to see if he could make out the watermark
and bingo Rob came back with details of the original designers.
It was Balloongenuity.
https://www.balloongenuity.com/
Thanks Rob.
I started off with the body last week, the pose was important.
The ruffles were too small on version one.
I then added the ears which look too symmetrical to me.
I changed the ruffles again for version two of Dumbo.
Using rounds for the ears.
These were the first two.
Then after a suggestion from Danielle I went and made the ears from hearts.
I used the 15" hearts and 350's for the body to up scale and make a Jumbo Dumbo.
I also changed the ruffle around his neck to a diamond weave.
He did come out quite a lot larger.
I enjoyed making Dumbo....ears were hard to get big enough, I attached 2 pink hearts together with raisin twists. Dumbo is very cute so I tried to capture that in my twisting.
We did the challenge a little different this time.
Usually we pick someone else's design and make a variation on the theme
but this time around we just picked a subject between us and went with that.
There was a few choices but we both went with Pinocchio.
This was the picture I based my design on.
I started of with the face, it got a little too complicated so decided
simpler would be better as once the rest of Pinocchio's features
were added a simpler face would work.
I started making Pinocchio in the loft/study/office and only took a few pictures on my phone.
The hat started as a sideways flower but we quickly changed that
and the hair needed to flow over tha face a little more.
In the picture his hand is closed so I was trying for this look.
Finished making him in my loft.
Then getting better pictures on my camera downstairs.
I then added artwork and made his hat slightly larger at the base.
I think using Maroon for his shoes worked out well.
I added some rogue to his cheeks.
Different angles of the finished Pinocchio.
I enjoyed making this challenge, mind you I think I have enjoyed them all.
I'm really pleased Graham chose Pinocchio.
I enjoyed making him and everything went together easily.
I even took photos of the progress this time.
I'm happy with how he come out and he actually works on the strings.
I gave him away as a prize at a job.
Some more pictures.
Pinocchio finished.
Its good the way our designs are both completely different.
I then went on and had a go at making Jiminy Cricket.
The picture on nose is one that came up on google search.
Not sure I like the added nose of artwork.
So I had little trouble choosing this week....but decided on pikachu as it is new in the cinema right now with detective Pikachu .....so this would be a fun choice.
Excellent, looking forward to making this one. But then I've enjoyed making them all.
Here is my attempt...with a fusion of twisting and distortion....I'm sure that is not everyone's cup of tea haha. I'm Definately learning learning lots with these challenges.
My attempt at Pikachu the detective.
I used 5" rounds for the leg section.
A couple of pictures as I made the design.
I also had a go at making a more line work one as well.
Was not keen on the smaller hat design.
Much happier with this smaller hat design.
Its my turn to choose the challenge so I'm going with ET.
Although I think this was a suggestion a few weeks back from Danielle.
So ET it is then.
Some pics of ET going together.
A few more pictures of him being assembled.
Version one finished, with red finger, although its the wrong finger, oops.
I then added extra 160's to give a more wrinkled look
and 160 between toes and foot.
I then changed the mouth section as it was too long and
looked ape like so made a little smaller.
Then bulked up the top section of head with an extra 160 around both eyes.
Just a shame I did 4 fingers and not 3 fingers and a thumb
plus his red finger wrong but I made last week, oops.
I was afraid of this challenge as seemed quite complicated.
But when I started twisting it turned out much easier then what I was thinking
..twisting when u don't have a clue helps sometimes...
I just followed a pic of ET...here is my progress..
A few more pictures.
I wanted to make a boys superhero design and seeing as Avengers have been in the cinema lots lately I decided to go with Captain America.
I made a few shields, rather than clog up this thread I started a new one
where I will post them all and the variations on Captain America design.
https://balloonchat.co.uk/picture-gallery/captain-america-11501/
This was my favourite shield.
Plus a few others, I made 9 in toatal and all are posted on the thread above.
These are the two Captain America that I finally ended up with.
I will post all the others onto this thread with variations on head design as well,
http://balloonchat.co.uk/picture-gallery/captain-america-11501/
This was one that really did challenge me as I made the body part a few times to get throw striped part right at hiscwaist. Some balloons I make flow from start to finish but this was more tricky, but I got there in the end and quite happy with him.
It was my turn to choose the challenge so I went with Jasmine from Aladdin.
I decided to make trousers using a heart....a little fiddly using a 6 inch....would be easier with a larger heart.
I could not create the right skin colour as she is lighter than mocha.
But I just used mocha as I felt blush was too pale. I also only had white hearts so I changed the colour on an app as she wears blue green or lilac mostly.
I added details and some bling 😊
My attempts at Jasmine,
as Danielle said Mocha is too dark and the blush is also not correct.
I tried black inside a blush as well but again struggled with the correct colour tone.
There are slight differences on all three pictures, double waist for balloon.
Inflated and un-inflated for hairband
I then went for version two of Jasmine.
And added a little more bling.
As well as doing the balloon I like to match with a face paint.
As you will see in the photos. If you would like to see more of
my designs including balloons please do check out my
Facebook page on.... https://www.facebook.com/danfunkyfacesballoons/
I asked my children what challenge do you think we should make.... hmmm they said...Danger Mouse! I said that's from when I was little in the 1980s ....they said no it's on a channel called Pop today.
So anyway here is my attempt.
I decided to use a geo for Danger Mouse head, it held together well.
I did start off with distorted 160 inside a 5 inch pink round for the ears
but they were not round enough so changed to just 5 inch rounds.
Penfolds head was more fiddly especially his glasses.
I think he would look better if I distorted the round as he has big cheeks.
Here below is the facepaint to match my Dangermouse balloon.
If you do need a kent painter or twister here are my details
https://www.facebook.com/danfunkyfacesballoons/
My attempt at Danger Mouse.
I was trying for this look with the hands on hips.
Just realized I forgot the logo on chest....ooops!
As the challenge was just Danger Mouse I was not going to make Penfold.
But then Danielle did and she inspired me to have a go.
So here we are,
I then tried for a longer thinner mouth look.
I also added smaller glasses.
I made Danger Mouse again with 646 for the body and some variations.
Challenge 14
This was my turn to decide.
It was tricky but I went with Wizard as when we googled not many showed up.
The one that did that was the starting point I'm unable to find at the moment.
Not a good start, it was in a collage of pictures.
Panic over..........................found it.
It was made by Juan Gonzales.
This was my starting point although Danielle had not
seen the picture before she made her design.
I liked the choice of Wizard and just started playing with balloons with no particular set plan in head.
It all started coming together and looking very cartoony.
I used a heart with raisins for his beard. The body is quite simple but works and looks best from the front.
From the side and rear.
This was my first attempt and then changed the cloak a little,
bigger nose and went to an all black hat.
I then supersized and tried a variation.
Was not too keen on the bubbles for hair under brim of hat.
I tried some variations on eyebrows instead of hair under brim of hat.
Not sure I was keen on any though.
The ends of balloon got hidden up on last picture.
I also changed the hat but think I prefer the original made with a heart.
It was taken a few days later as you can see the matt look on the black balloons.
I've decided to add another boy design to the challenge.....this being iron man....I havent seen many designs so perfect for us to try 😊
Here is my effort....I decided to make him 3 foot 6.
Next time I would give him wider hips. his light on chest has a real light in 😆
Here is a pic so you can see size better
Looking forward to this challenge, your Ironman looks great Danielle.
I started to make a larger version of Iron Man but struggled with getting the face right.
So went back to making a smaller version and adapting a design I made a while back.
The first picture with goldenrod is a design I made a few years back
now so just updated it a little and used the chrome gold.
I'm on face number 4 for the larger version and will keep playing
and post pictures shortly of the larger version.
I struggled making the head look right on the larger model of Iron Man.
I will post all my versions onto another thread so we keep this one
a little more tidy. I think this was head version five.
Just looking at all the other head design pictures this might be version
8 or 9.... I did not realise I made so many, Insert shocked emoji face!
It eventually came out OK.
The other thread to see how my Iron Man evolved.

Challenge 16
It was my turn to pick the next challenge so went with a Cat design by TwisTee,
this is the second design we have used form her. The first was the Girl and Teddy.
This is also the second Cat challenge we have done, our first challenge
was the laying down Cat from Masayoshi Matsumoto.
The picture is from TwisTee, and her details are,
Instagram account, https://www.instagram.com/balloontwistee/?hl=en
Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/Kaiumporn.P
Here is my attempt at the cat design.
I then went slightly off picture and design with version two.
Both together and then I made a slightly bigger head for the cat.
I think it looks nicer with the smaller original head.
Here is my attempt of the cat from an artist Balloon TwistTEE who's work is gorgeous.
I didn't quite capture the cuteness and mine is rather chunky...but I like that.
I'm glad Graham chose this for our challenge.
And for his help on how to do the eyes...thank you!!!
This week I had a go at making Grahams Tiffany lamp....I chose this out of thousands of others on balloon chat as It's a gorgeous design.
I made it to enter the competition to win a Blackpool Balloon Bash ticket...I'm already going but would give to someone that can't afford to go.
I'm pleased the lamp inspired you Danielle.
The added lights are a good idea as well.
I also added the cracked effect to the design and the electrical lead.
It was my turn to set the challenge. What usually happens is Danielle sends
me 3 or 4 pictures and I choose the one I like best from those to try.
We did it this way again, the design we decided to try and
re create was the reindeer by Masayoshi Matsumoto.
This is his website, https://www.behance.net/isopresso9c59
and Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/masayoshi.matsumoto.5
I thought the upper and lower body was a 350 but on reflection its a
260 in Masayoshi Matsumoto design. My deer looks a little fat.
Great pics of ypurs Graham...looks great...
I thought this would be fairy quick....but the hardest bit was at the end getting his posture right. I think mine needed an extra pinch twist at the neck to bring it more upright.
I love the look of Masayoshi Matsumoto reindeer so I hope i have captured some of it in mine.
This week we approach Halloween and I come across Derek Wong from Twisted inflations ( http://www.twistedinflations.ca/ ) IT clown sculpture. It truly is a master piece and I struggled to get it made as well but gave it my best shot. Here is mine above Derek's....as if you wouldn't realise that...hee hee.
When you sent me this one for the challenge Danielle I was rather pleased.
It's a good challenge and Derek's design is stunning and so well proportioned.
I'm making mine at the moment and getting the face right is a real challenge.
This is Derek's Facebook page as well, https://www.facebook.com/d.cn.wong
This one was a challenge, did you see what I did there..........Ha Ha
I tried a couple of variations on the face and still to me
the mouth looks more Joker like than "IT"
I did start off with rolled eyes but struggled getting them to sit as I wanted.
So went with 160 eyes just tied in, as in picture one, it did not look right to me.
I went back to rolled eyes on picture two and changed fore head/eyebrow look.
I also made the top mouth section a lot wider, plus added a smaller nose.
Again it still did not look right.
On picture three I added rather larger fore head/eyebrows.
I also added a double lower jaw section so the mouth sat in a little on the design.
I think this is the better one but still not quite the look.
It was a good challenge though, I might have another go soon.
oops, just realised I did not add artwork.....what a donut!
With artwork.
I had another go at making Pennywise from "IT"
This is challenge 20 for us both. The original design is made by jamroly66 on insta.
I'm not sure if they have a facebook or website with other designs.
On insta the structure of the designs all follow a similar pattern
and they just make male and female characters.
I really love these manga characters by jamroly66 ... each one wearing unusual funky clothes.
I thought and looked at the pics a lot before twisting so I could work
it out in my head before as looked pretty technical.
I'm just happy I worked out the head.
Here is my attempt anyway....
This is my version of the design, again I really enjoyed making and trying to
work out how others construct a design. As I said when we set out on these
challenges I was not that keen on making others designs but I'm now a
convert as I do a slight variation on a theme here and there but also
keep pretty good to the design we are making.
I also made another design from jamroly66 as we were originally going to
make the design below but Danielle saw the girl in the white dress and
asked if it was Ok to do that design. I was fine with it but had already
made the first choice so posting it here for completeness.
As Frozen 2 is now out and it's get wintery I decided to make Elsa for the challenge.
I found this design on Insta and unfortunately do not know who designed it
so if you know please do let me know so i can credit them.
I did have a look around and on the Instagram balloonartistideas page where they post
from all other pages it was credited to @fusen_zero and it is on that page so
hopefully we have credited the right person for the design.
This was my attempt for making the design.
I then added the artwork which I was pretty pleased with for me
I loved Graham's Elsa really good artwork too.
I decided to make mine a little different as I wanted to learn how to do distorted
eyes where they are attached and pulled in from the inside. It didn't work how
I wanted but was a big learning curve and I think she still looked cute at the end.
I also had a go at painting her hair with face paint....
but I found it loses the balloons shine but much faster then using pens!
Front and back view with Olaf as well.
We have just finished challenge 21 for the year.
At first I was not enthusiastic about making others designs when Danielle
suggested the challenge. But I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of
trying to make the designs look a little like the originals although I have
added some artistic license to a few.
The plan is to start the challenge again in the New Year.
Thanks for an excellent thread, I have really enjoyed it.
