Balloon Review 060 - Balloon Art DVD 2 by Pieter Van Engen

Available from http://www.balloonartdvd.com/html/dvd_shop.html priced at 35 euros including worldwide shipping. I received the DVD within four days of ordering and as always shipping was speedy and the service first class.

I really enjoyed Pieter's first DVD. There are eight different designs on this DVD. The instructions are first rate and the quality of the DVD is exceptionally good.

Let's see if Pieter can continue his previously set high standard....

OCTOPUS

KIT LIST : 321Q RED / 321Q ORANGE / 5" CLEAR / 11" Agate Orange

This Octopus is really cool. The legs comprise entirely of 321Qs and the head/eyes are easily attached. If you are used to inflating and shaping 321Qs this really is a quick Octopus to make. It looks much nicer than the usual 260Q legged version that I have seen many times and if you add a balloon weight it stands on its own. This is a real world item that I will use a lot. The super agate balloon are always impressive to look at except the orange one I have used here doesn't look as stripey as normal.

CHAINSAW

KIT LIST : 350Q GREY / 350Q RED / 260Q RED / 160Q SILVER / 160Q BLACK

The perfect balloon for dealing with naughty children! This chainsaw is very quick and simple to construct but is incredibly sturdy. I can see the boys bashing the hell out of each other and the balloon will keep its shape. Really nice and one I will be using.

MOTORBIKE

KIT LIST : 160Q CHOC / 160Q GREY / 260Q GREY / 350Q GREY / 160Q SILVER / 260Q SILVER / 260Q BLACK / 350Q BLACK / 260Q YELLOW / 260Q RED / 5" RED ROUND

In my opinion this is one of the highlights of the DVD. This design uses plenty of different balloons and is a design that is very time consuming and technically fairly difficult due to the various tulip/marriage twists. The overall design is excellent and I am really pleased with the finished model for my first attempt. Pieter's attention to detail is impressive and he is a very competent tutor for such a complex design. I found some of the deep tulip twists challenging with the silver metallic balloons. There is lots of cutting and tying and to me this design is something you would make ahead of any special event. NOT for beginners.

A really nice showcase model.

DUCK

KIT LIST : 11" YELLOW ROUND / 260Q ORANGE / 5" WHITE ROUND

A wonderful cuddly duck. Fairly easy to make if you are comfortable wrestling and twisting a 11" round balloon. Very quick, perfect for line or restaurant work. It can be a little tricky to get a perfectly round body shape and my one is a little oval.

LONG HORN SKULL

KIT LIST : 350Q WHITE / 260Q WHITE / 321Q WHITE

A puzzling design choice and in isolation probably not something I would use very often but really this is intended for the next sculpture on the DVD (this is coming soon!). A very clever design which looks amazing. I would say that using white balloons on the DVD wasn't the best choice as it can be difficult to follow along. Perhaps a darker balloon would have been good just for the teaching segment. This design would be great to accompany any wild west type balloon. There isn't anything technically challenging here and it is fairly quick to make.

VULTURE

KIT LIST : 260Q ORANGE / 260Q PALE BLUE / 260Q BLUSH / 260Q CHOC / 350Q WHITE

This vulture has a lovely expressive character which looks superb on top of the previously made skull. I really love this and it is a wonderful display piece. The design is straight forward - nothing difficult and fairly quick to make. You will use this one.

FLOWER

KIT LIST : 260Q WILD BERRY / 160Q ROSE / 160Q LIME GREEN

Whilst a standalone item this flower really needs to go with the Dragonfly (coming next) - the design is very simple although spiraling a 160Q is always a challenge for me. The flower itself is standard and for the neatest outcome you will use five 160s for the centre of the flower. I cheated and used two 160s so the ends of the balloons are not as neat. I cannot see myself making this one as a standalone item but as a base for another animal/bird this could be useful.

DRAGONFLY

KIT LIST : 160Q ROBINS EGG / 260Q ROBINS EGG / 350Q ROBINS EGG / 260Q BLACK / 160Q CLEAR

This dragonfly is really good. The use of several marriage twists gives the model a solid feel as all the sections fit together nice and snug. This one looks great when mounted on the flower base. On the DVD, Pieter presents the flower/dragonfly freely standing upright. How that was possible is beyond me as my flower with the additional weight on top just fell over. This one is certainly the best dragonfly design I have seen before.

SUMMARY

There are some excellent designs on this DVD including the Vulture, Motorbike and the Dragonfly. It is the quality of the designs which make this DVD worthwhile for the price tag and if the models were not quite as good I would expect more content as in reality there are only six complete models.

Pieter is an excellent teacher, the video quality is excellent throughout and he is very good at explaining all the finer details. Many of these models are time consuming and seem aimed at those with a fair amount of experience but used for special occasions these are reputation makers.

I really hope Pieter will release volume 3 at some point in the future.
