Balloon Review 063 - Twelve! DVD by Scott Tripp and Sam Cremeens

Details on how to order can be found here...  http://www.facebook.com/BalloonBlastVideoShow - priced ONLY $12

I am sure all of you will know Scott and Sam from their weekly internet video show Balloon Blast. This DVD was produced to coincide with the end of the world (12/12/12) which fortunately didn't happen! Limited to 144 copies (12 x 12) I purchased this DVD without even thinking about it to show my support for Scott and Sam given I receive a lovely weekly video for FREE!

The DVD arrived fairly quickly and has a lovely hand drawn piece of artwork for the front cover in a regular CD sized case. For $12 I really do not expect too much at all.... let's see what we have here....

p.s don't wait for me to complete my review - order now as they will be running out soon!

SKULL N BONES BRACELET

KIT LIST : 260Q WHITE / 5" PRINTED FACE (now with 10% discount from Graham!)

A nice quick and simple balloon to get started. Scott shows various designs using the same crossbones and different prints/colours of 5" rounds. Even more impressive is the crossbones are made out of a single white 260Q (clever design). I can see this being useful as a standalone item or incorporated into a pirate hat or mounted on a headband.

In terms of instructions, Scott is very good in his explanations and tips. The DVD comes supplied with full menus so you can quickly access your model of choice. Check out the balloon blast video show to see what to expect.

This is a usable real world design.

BUMBLE BEE BRACELET

KIT LIST : 321Q YELLOW / 5" GOOGLEEYES / 6" WHITE HEART / 260Q BLACK

A fairly standard bumble bee that I have been making for years except this one uses white hearts for wings. It is not clear on the photo but Scott shows how to under inflate a heart and with a gentle squeeze get a lovely set of bumblebee wings. Simple but a really nice touch. I just learned something new! This is a usable model and great for line work.

HI 5 HAT

KIT LIST : 350Q ORANGE / 260Q LIME GREEN / A LATEX GLOVE!

This is a funny one. You need to use your imagination a little as this model should have an inflated latex glove attached to the end. I didn't have any gloves laying around! More importantly this hat design is really useful and can be used for many different things. I will be using this next time I visit the Children's Ward at my local hospital!

FLAMINGO

KIT LIST : 260Q PINK / 160Q BLACK

This flamingo was featured in the first edition of the Balloon Blast video show but Scott has filmed it again so the instructions are clearer. This is a great design for speed making any variety of birds and perfect for line work.

FISHING ROD AND FISH

KIT LIST : 260Q MOCHA BROWN / 260Q LIGHT BLUE / 321Q YELLOW / 160Q CLEAR / 5" WHITE ROUND / SOMETHING SECRET!

A fairly standard fishing rod and fish design but this one has something special which is such a brilliant idea. With this design the fishing rod can actually be used to catch the fish. I won't say anymore than this so you will have to buy this DVD to discover the secret - simply brilliant.

TANK

KIT LIST : 260Q LIME GREEN / 321Q LIME GREEN / 160Q BLACK (I used Choc Brown)

A quick tank to make but not one personally suitable for me as it uses glue dots and a drinking straw. I think with some adaptation these drawbacks can be removed (see Graham's recent efforts) to make it a very usable model.

This is the link if anyone wishes to see my variation which I have to say I would not have made if I had not seen the tank on 12, it inspired me  :)

MAGIC PINEAPPLE

Sorry I haven't made this one as I do not have the balloons and to be honest it is not really my thing. Effectively to his an 11" round double stuffed with a clear that is exposed through a little window at the bottom of the 11" round. A small wooden cube is placed inside and messages are written on each side of the cube. As the balloon is shaken then a difference message appears. This is a bit like a Magic 8 Ball if you know what one of those is. It may be fun to some people so I will leave this one as a mystery for when you view the DVD!

MACE

KIT LIST : 321Q MOCHA BROWN / 160Q WHITE / 260Q GREY

This mace is full of fun and frustration! I really love this one. The top is made up of a balloon ball which sounds complicated to start with but Scott does a good job at explaining everything. This design is a little tough as it can be difficult to weave in the bubbles due to the tight space. The 321Q makes a brilliant handle. It's a little slow to make the first time around but I am sure speed will come with time.

DRAGON

KIT LIST : 260Q YELLOW / 5" LIME GREEN / 160Q LIME GREEN / 350Q LIME GREEN / 321Q LIME GREEN

Scott's original design is made in red balloons but I decided to use green.

This is a great design and can be made as elaborate as time allows. I especially like the head design and the nostrils using the lobes of a heart. I hadn't see this technique before but it is really good. The 321Q tail allows the dragon to stand on it's own. Clearly not for line work or when you do not have much time but one of the best dragons I have seen so far. Worth $12 on it's own!

SKATEBOARD

KIT LIST : 260Q ORANGE / 260Q BLACK / 260Q GREY / 321Q LIME GREEN

I'm not a massive fan of weaved designs so left this one until the end! If you are new to flat weaving then this would be an excellent introductory tutorial to explain the technique. I must confess it did get a little bored making this and so my skateboard is shorter. The wheel design is effective. My final skateboard bends a little in the middle. I am unlikely to make this design in isolation but if I needed to mount a character on a skateboard (such as Bart Simpson) this model would be ideal. Well worth a look if only to learn a new technique.
