Balloon Review 066 - Balloon Magic Magazine #63 - Priced $7

I've been holding off reviewing this edition of Balloon Magic Magazine as I needed a customer to request a dinosaur balloon and today it happened!

Let's see what we have here.....

RIDE INSIDE T-REX BY DON CALDWELL

KIT LIST : 646Q LIME GREEN / 350Q LIME GREEN / 350Q YELLOW / 321Q LIME GREEN / 260Q LIME GREEN / 260Q RED / 260Q WHITE

I have been waiting to make this T-Rex for quite some time as I needed a reason to make it. Today I was asked for a special birthday balloon of a dinosaur.

This design by Don Caldwell is simply stunning. It uses a massive 12 646Qs (so this will give you some indication of size) and the first time around it took around 45mins. The instructions are very easy to follow but as with most 646Q designs you do need to do a bit of wrestling with the balloons to get the bubbles you need. The face design is classic Don and one that you will recognise from some of his designs in his recent multiple DVD collection. The face is very expressive and can be adapted accordingly.

My most favourite part of this design are the T-Rex's legs. Very chunky and solid. This balloon is supposed to be a ride-inside model but I decided to make mine a standalone model. I put a clear 260Q between the feet to hold them in position and this model actually stood on its own.

The only tricky part was trying to keep the teeth in position. I had to tuck them under the upper lip otherwise they would roll down off the face.

Everyone should make this one... just look how much the birthday boy liked it. This one is a showstopper... trust me, it just did!

PRINCESS HAT v1

KIT LIST : 260Q PEARL AZZURE / 260Q PEARL WHITE / 5" DISNEY FACE

This design uses the Disney Princess Heads which are only licenced for sale in the USA. The princess head can be substituted for any suitable print or just draw your own. I didn't have any Pearl 260Qs so chose pale blue instead which probably isn't as good. Not particularly quick to make but quite good.

SUPER HEROES

Similar to the princess hat idea, these balloons use the superhero heads that are only available from the USA. I really like these, very effective and relatively quick, the children love them. I haven't described their structure in detail as it is pretty easy to work out for yourselves.

LEPRECHAUN BRACELET

KIT LIST : 250Q BLUSH / 350Q ORANGE  /260Q ROSE / 160Q GREEN / 160Q LIME GREEN / 160Q BLACK / 160Q YELLOW

Another David Brenion wristband. The base design is fairly standard but I particularly like the hat design on this. Using just a 160Q it gives an impression and a full hat shape. Can be easily adapted for any style of character or perhaps mounted on a headband.

MOTORCYCLE

KIT LIST : 260Q ANY COLOUR

A nice addition to this magazine is a blast from the past. This model is from the original Marvin Hardy book entitled "Balloon Magic 260 Figures" which is the first book I ever owned and learned from. I rarely make models from a single balloon but this motorcycle is still a classic and always a challenge!

Well worth a go...
