Balloon Review 121 : Blossom Buddies by Tonya McNeill DVD

Available from... not sure anymore to be honest... have a search on google or contact Tonya directly!

Another random selection from the balloon vault is one of Tonya's DVDs. For those of you who take time to look in this section will find a lot of Tonya's material. I absolutely love her creations. This DVD is a collection of designs that utilise Geo Blossoms. Hopefully we will discover there is more to geo blossoms than flowers!

To start, this DVD is well produced. Each model is indexed and Tonya is an excellent teacher. One nice touch which I haven't seen before is that throughout the tuition the final model is always displayed on the screen in the bottom right corner. This is very handy when relating the instructions to the final model.

Let's see what we have here...

FISH

A very simple fish design. This one uses a raisin inside the geo to hold the tail in place. Not particularly tricky but you do need to make sure the geo is soft. Quick artwork and if you are comfortable with raisins then perfect for line work.

FROG

I jumped straight to the last model on this DVD as I liked it so much. This frog is excellent. The use of 350s makes it chunky and freestanding. Sizing for the legs is critical otherwise it will not sit right. The geo gives a nice shape for the frog''s tummy. The artwork is fast to do and looks great. I can't fault this one and I will be using this design a lot!

BUNNY

This bunny uses a geo for the body just like the frog. The ears and head is made up of 2 x 321Qs which is a fairly economic way to make the face. The arms and legs are very quick and simple. This model is fairly large and is manageable for line work if you can work fast with 321Qs. Worth a look. Tonya's artwork is better than mine.

DUCK

A very simple geo duck. Does a solid yellow geo exist? Anyway this one is made with a citrine yellow geo which looks a bit rubbish. The 160Q wings are difficult to fit into the geo due to the 350Q. I am not sure I like the look of this design.

I have just added them to the website and will have in stock with my next order, they only sent one bag so will wait till I have a larger quantity to offer.
It may be these were only available in the US, not sure if they are new or just new to the UK. http://www.balloonartwholesale.co.uk/balloons/geo-blossom/

TEDDY BEAR

This teddy bear uses a familar face design. The arms are difficult to position properly and the head easily turns to one side. Tonya shows an example made in 'Pooh' colours which looks nice. My proportions are also out slightly but you get the idea!

ROOSTER

This rooster uses the same body and feet design as previous models. For me the beak could be more simplified by eliminating the two spacer bubbles between each cheek (will make sense when you watch the DVD) - typical of me to draw the eyes in the wrong place! Probably a little too long to make for the end result and there are simpler methods available.

PANDA

This panda is a variation of a teddy bear. I think the panda's body is too thin and needs to be wider. A standard design similar to the others on the DVD.

HORSE

An interesting idea for a horse but i think the geo body makes it look a little odd. A round is used for the head and there is much fun to be had by putting a raisin inside the geo. This may look better in yellow as a giraffe!

SHEEP

The same applies as the Horse design - the geo body doesn't quite look right. The only difference on this model is the head design. Probably not one I will be using.

PIG

Using the same body as a number of designs this is a pig. I still do not like the geo as a body as it looks a little out of shape. Quick to make and passable as a pig.

CROUCHING TIGER

Similar to the previous four legged animal designs. This original design is made in orange but I didn't have any orange geos! A interesting design and a quick way to make a versatile animal body. If you check out the latest edition of balloon magic magazine you will see the use of a geo body to make a goat.

TIGER

An oversized tiger than uses a bear head. This design is OK but I find the head does always stay in position even with a large pinch twist behind it. Not too much to say about these designs that has not already been said!

SUMMARY

A selection of geo variations for animals which with a little imagination can lead to many more designs. The DVD is worth getting just for the frog which is by far the best model.
