Balloon Review 138 : The Balloon Artistes Guild BAG 4

Shirley Ray & Colin Myles Lectures - 17th April 2012
Running Time 4 hours!

Available from http://www.balloonartwholesale.co.uk

As we approach the end of 2014 and look forward to starting a new year of TBAG (April 2015 onwards), I thought now may be a good time to review on for the DVDs that comes supplied with a TBAG membership. This DVD includes two guest lectures with over four hours worth of material. This is a fixed camera position video, each model is accessible via the chapter menu and the quality of the DVD is good. I didn't attend this event myself so reviewing this DVD it will be good to see if I can make the models using only the DVD supplied...

Let's see what we have here...

SNAIL

This snail is (or was) available from Shirley's own website for £5.  A nice way to make a snail shell without having to struggle to spiral a 260Q. This design is quite quick to make and has minimal artwork. Ideal for line work if your queue is not too long.

BUTTERFLY

A mini butterfly comprising of 160Q wings. These wings were fairly fiddly to make and to get in the right position. Too long for line work and maybe a different choice of colours would have worked better. Not my favourite butterfly design.

THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE

The best Thomas balloon I have ever seen. The design is fairly easy and the final result is large and chunky. Shirley provides step by step instructions on how to draw the face. Her instructions must be good as my attempt looks fairly decent. Instantly recognisable and if I don't get any other usable designs on this DVD I have had my monies worth!

DRACULA

A fun little design using mainly 160Qs. Shirley uses some fabric to finish off this design which is effective. Without the fabric it looks a little odd. Fairly time consuming to make as the pinch twists in the 160Q kept coming undone!

QUEEN OF HEARTS

A lovely hat concept that could be used to make a full figure. The face design is interesting and the character's expression is great considering only a 260Q is used. Shirley adds her trademark artwork (better than mine) and the end result is a very pleasing design. I love it.

GHOST

This design is similar to the dracula one - using 160Qs for the main body. I had a problem keeping the head in position and added an additional pinch twist to the back of the neck. I don't really like working with models that using nearly all 160Qs - the end result is too small and fiddly to have any practical use in the real world.

GIRAFFE

This wacky giraffe stands very tall. The video instructions are challenging in that at some points Shirley disappears to the side of the camera but it is not impossible to follow along with the instructions (i managed!)

A really fun design to make. The construction is fairly simple. As the legs are thin (160Qs) these design will not stand on its own.

Nice.
