Balloon Review 154 - Balloon Art DVD 3 by Pieter Van Engen

Available from http://balloonartdvd.com/product/balloo ... van-engen/ priced at 33 euros including worldwide shipping.

I really enjoyed Pieter's first two DVDs (see links below) and I am hoping this one will offer the same high standard. There are eight different designs on this DVD. The instructions are first rate and the quality of the DVD is exceptionally good. I recall some of these designs appearing in editions of Balloon Magic Magazine so if you have these it would be worth checking.

Let's see if Pieter can continue his previously set high standard....

TURTLE

I've seen many Turtle designs over the years and this is one of the best. Unlike a lot of Pieter's designs this one is for the real world. Quick to make, perfect for a headband or bracelet. Simple artwork. This design is also made easier with the use of a Q-link Mocha for the shell (but you can use a regular round with either a raisin or a side wall bubble).

I like it.

PISTOL

I very rarely make any sort of weapons at a paid event as it usually results in kids fighting and people getting upset. I only make weapons with specific approval from the person who has hired me and even then I resist as much as possible.

This pistol is very intricate and neatly designed. The end result is lovely. I would most likely use this pistol as part of a larger build and not something I would make for line work. It will take too long and besides as most little boys usually destroy their weapons within the first five minutes why bother going to so much effort!

SHEEP

A sheep/goat based on a Geo body - this design can be found in Balloon Magic Magazine. It looks great mounted on a 11" round balloon. The legs are a bit of a squeeze and hard to avoid leaving a gap between each pair. Add optional horns to turn the Sheep into a Mountain Goat!

Well worth a look.

FISH

This fish uses 321Qs for tail and fins. 321Qs can be tricky to inflate at the taper end and then shock twist them to give a decent shape. I haven't achieved it here! Whilst the 321Qs add a slight edge to the end result, it would look equally with 260Qs and will be quicker to make.

Just a thought!

HELICOPTER

One of my favourite designs on this DVD is the helicopter. This one uses a lot of balloons (although you can save quite a few of your are economical with them). This design has a lovely shape, sadly mine lost the shape as it flew into the garden for a photo but you get the idea! You can speed up this design by cutting out some of the intricate detail.

I found the need to insert a small coin at the nose so it stood on its own without tipping backwards.

Well worth a look...

PARROTS ON A STICK

These parrots are made as a pair - I only made one. To be honest once you have encountered Patrick Van De Ven's bird design anything else just doesn't come near. These parrots are nice, colour and look great as a pair. Fairly simple to make and can be made in a variety of colours.

RABBIT ON A SKATEBOARD

Shown as two separate chapters on the DVD this is a rabbit and a skateboard. This is without doubt the hardest design to make on the DVD. The face uses a double frumple twist. Basically a frumple twist is when you push the knot of the heart balloon back inside the balloon (like a tulip twist) but push it into the side of the heart and tie it secure from the outside of the heart using a scrap of balloon. Now making a single frumple twist is certainly achievable if the heart is very soft but to make a second one in the SAME balloon crossing the other one is a challenge. It took me a very long time to do this and even then my joining points were in the wrong place so I was unable to add the teeth for the Bunny as part of the lower jaw. I gave up!!

Matt Falloon uses this design on one of his DVDs. Totally impracticable for my real world work!

I do like the final design though - it is a good character.

SUMMARY

I really like Pieter's designs. They are all well constructed and he pays attention to the finer details. I feel the designs should remain exclusive to the DVD rather than featuring them in Balloon Magic Magazine as this would increase the overall value for money. Check you don't own these designs prior to purchasing but if you would like to improve the quality of your creations and gain lots of helpful tips then this DVD is for you.
