My understanding at the moment is that it will be from 6/11th Nov, same place Mol, Belgium.
Cost to be decided, but a bargain whatever the price.

I knew the dates,...let Brenda promisse that she will come this year, and then.. :o  :o ....I BOOKED SOMETHING ON THE LAST MILLENNIUMDAY!!!
How stupid can you be? Luckely it's on the last day, I only have to miss the last evening, but AAAAARRRHHHGGGG! I'm so mad at myself.

It's great to have a new job, and be able to book early for the courses I have to give, but then I must really put everything in my agenda to be sure not ta make the same mistake again!

I'll get in touch with Leo when I get back from the magic convention on Monday
Title: Re: The Millennium Jam 2010
Post by: Graham Lee on March 17, 2010, 10:54:21 AM
Have just spoken with Leo and the dates are confirmed for Sunday 7th to Thursday 11th November with a gala meal on Sat 6th.
I'm looking into running the trip again and will see if it will go over on the Friday or Sat.
The cost will be approx £330, convention price will be 225 Euros, shared room 75 Euros and then Eurostar at approx £60. There is an additional cost for a seperate room to yourself if you would rather not share, at a guess it will be an additional £60.
Gala show tickets including a meal, last year this was a great night and from memory the tickets last year cost 40 Euros.
So put the date in the diary, as yet the website has not been updated for this year but will be done soon...........ish

The Organised "Chaos" Millennium Jam Trip, 2010
Just got off the phone with speaking to Leo about the trip and it will be £325, the website he is hoping to have live on the 1st July so probaly middle of August    You know Leo!
Please note we have to get a train from Brussels to South Antwerp this year, this train takes approx 25 mins and the taxi from Antwerp to Mol approx 45 mins.

This amount is for :
-lodging: 7 nights (based 4 pers.per bungalow ) : checkin=friday 05/11 after 15.00hrs * checkout=friday 12/11 before  10.00hrs
-the high speed train to/from StPancras
-shuttle to and from the trainstation in Antwerp-Berchem : the train from Brussels-South to Antwerp is included in your ticket  !
-the registration for 5 days and nights of balloon chaos and mayhem !!
The distributor diner+show is NOT included in registration ; I don't have a price yet ... but in 2008 it was 40 Euro's and an excellent evening with great food and entertainment.

If you would like a bedroom on your own not sharing but you still share a bungalow it will be an additional £60 approx, final date to confirm is the 4th Aug.
We will travel out on Friday 5th Nov and return Friday 12th Nov.
Payment to myself for £65 to cover the Eurostar and then final payment made straight to Leo at the event for the remainder of 320 Euro's, approx £260.

Some people have been in touch saying they would rather Paypal the money to me, I'm OK with this but you will have to pay the charges to cover the extra costs so it will be £75 cheque or £78 Paypal.
Or I could take cash at the party day in Birmingham on the 30th. Have five people already booked on for the trip of a lifetime, it will be fun with a capital FFFFFFFF.........

Graham,

I am hoping to come to MJ this year but only for 2 days.

I realise that this question is best asked once the schedule is out, but would you have any opinion on the best likely days? I.e the start or end of the convention?

Last call for the organised trip, I will be booking Eurostar next Thursday 15th July. If you decide to come after this date then you will need to book and pay for your own Eurostar ticket on the same trains as I  book. Prices do start to go up and they only have a few £69 tickets. The reason I take £75 is they charge you for using your credit card for payment and also for booking via their call centre as we need tickets to Antwerp as well.

TO ALL MILLENNIUM JAM ATTENDEES !
Here is an urgent message from SUNPARKS .The week running up to the Jam is school holiday (autumn break!) in Belgium .This means that Sunparks exspect many ,many bookings from regular tourists. Please book your bungalow or hotel room ASAP to make sure you have a bungalow close to the main building . If you wait to the last minute , you risk to have a bungalow at the other side of the lake which is ,to say the least, 'a healthy walk' or - in the worst case scenario that the park is fully booked - not have a bungalow at all !
Please do not wait too long or you may have to miss the one event you must attend !!See you soon !

Here are the links that take you directly to the SUNPARKS website :

I don't know what it is like in your neck of the woods but here in the US we have a homeless person on nearly every freeway off ramp and street corner begging for money. Usually they have a sign made from a card board box (very un-original if you ask me) that states they are homeless and any amount of money is appreciated.

I've been considering sitting on a street corner with a card board sign to beg for enough money to get to Millenium jam!

I'm just not sure how to word it... "Belgium or bust" or "I don't need beer money... just a ticket to Europe" sigh... "I'm not homeless... Just want money". Then I thought I could stand there and twist balloons for money...

JUST KIDDING!

I'm still trying to figure out how to get there...

I'm not saying no yet!

Quote from: "Patricia Bunnell"I don't know what it is like in your neck of the woods but here in the US we have a homeless person on nearly every freeway off ramp and street corner begging for money.

So Graham,

what are the arrangements for Friday morning.

I can also recommend changing money at Marks & Spencer's. I got a good rate, no commission charged.

I wish you a lot of fun at the Millenium Jam in belgium ! I am sad that I have no time.I have to work and the only day I can visit the millenium jam is the 7th November (Sunday). From germany, where I live it takes 2 hours and 15 minutes by car and only for one day ....
8.11-11.11 I must work :-(

Tomorrow and Sunday I have time and I think about to come to belgium to meet Thelma and Graham :-) Or better I come to London on day in summer ?

In germany is very bad weather today.

I hope that you take a lot of pictures from nice balloon creations and post them in the forum !!!!

Have fun !!!!

Happy twisting !!!!!

Greetings from  germany,

Marc

The fun has started already, meeting friends from across the seas,( both new & familiar), and around the globe. There is a big influx of Americans this year, lots of well known names. Plus the usual clan of European ballooners.
All stops have been pulled out and the decor looks awesome. I haven't taken any photos as yet. Thats next!

Even the chalets are better, sheets there already, towels too. The new management is having an effect and it maks it  better. Gala show tonight and then tomorrow.... it begins!

Danny :)

Just got out and away from the think tank that Thelma and I have been attending all day with Ralph and 10 others, very interesting and it got the old grey matter working, it was a long old day 10 till 6. Just sitting in the cafe/bar area with a beer waiting for the gala show/diner to start at 7.30. Have taken a few pictures which I hope I will have time to re-size and up load tomorrow. As  Danny says the place does seem a little more organised with even a kettle and towels in the chalets now. IBS also sent a lovely welcome pack to the chalet of chocolates and a few other goodies for us all to share.

Sitting at the back of Flipo's class with basic twisting, already have seen a variation for a nice quick two balloon dog so worth sitting in on and he has only been talking for 15 mins. The gala show was very interesting last night with Monsieuur Siegried having a third person in the act, a juggler. His timing to the music/juggling/mime was just so spot on, very enjoyable. Just gonig to start re-sizing some pictures to put onto the forum.

TMJ has been amazing so far.... and today is only day 1!!

Highlight for me so far was Alberto Falcone's class - some really fresh, original and definitely usable 'huggable' creations.

Wandering around the complex here it's like a who's who of the great and the good of the international balloon community -- it is a fantastic experience and truly inspiring   :D

Will post some pics up over the next day or two.

Sitting in the back of Dee White class on the business side of twisting and a group of about 20 people came in late from balloon express and for the next 10/15 mins they just stood and chatted at the back with no regard to Dee teaching the class  :(

Anyway back to the pictures; The last picture is of Thelma taking a picture of the weeks event that is printed on the back of our name tags, it is so small we are unable to read it so Thelma took a picture so we could enlarge the print on her camera to see what is going on this week.

Would be nice to know what kind of wire used. Flexible or rigid?
Title: Re: The Millennium Jam 2010
Post by: Graham Lee on November 08, 2010, 01:55:55 PM
Although the class was fantasy flowers which do have the wire inside these are more origami like the rose that I make on Volume three with no wirein side the balloon. They did use some flexible wire for some of their work when rolling the balloon around where it connected to the stem.

It was a shame not enough people booked to attend his workshop last week as Andrew makes excellent figures from 2/3/4 balloons that are quick enough for the real world.

I missed the awards as we were talking with the American's in the foyer, it seems there was tactical voting and a sculpture won that would not have made it into the top eight/ten? as there are a team over from Italy. Everyone has three votes to vote for there favourite piece and team Italy all put the votes in for their friend and with about 30 team members you can see what happened, eurovision all over again!
All the other competition entries have to be in by 5 pm tonight so we still have plenty more pictures to come.

Took a few hundred pictures last nigfht of all the competition pieces, would be difficult to put into words thoughts on how fantastic the standard is and how awe-inspiring it is just walking around the room. I spent a good while just walking about as sometimes you miss things on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd time of looking. I need to upload and resize all the pictures over lunch later.

I'd just like to confirm what Graham has said about the competition entries this year. The standard is very high and I overheard one of the judges saying it was really tough deciding.

There were three competitions this year:
Fairy tale themed dresses
Multiple balloons
One balloon

Its mind blowing, inspiring and joygasmic.

I'm really looking forward to the Gala show tonight with some amazing acts and the winners will be announced too.

Phew!  Finally made it back up to Edinburgh.

Many thanks Graham for organising the trip, and everything you did for us.  I'm buzzing, inspired and my confidence has shot up.  I am SO glad I made it over this year.

It was wonderful to meet new friends, and to get to chat to the many talented artists I've seen on DVDs and YouTube.  I know everyone says it, but you MUST try to get to an event like this -- it was just brilliant!!  :D  :D

Thanks again Graham.

I just do not know were to start.

I got home last night and fell asleep in the chair I woke up and after a few seconds realised I was at home, For a few seconds I felt sad but then I started to think about the new friends that I hope will be friends for life, the new things I have learned, not just the models but ideas on how to present them. My mind just cant cope with all that is spinning around it.

Graham I can not thank you enough for organising the trip and making it so easy for us to go. I know it has changed my life.

Thelma & Graham congratulations on your awards if anyone deserves them you do. Thelma I do hope you are feeling better.

Dan you are the man.

To Tony Dave Neil, perhaps my sides will stop hurting now boy did we have a good time.

As for the girls what can I say but thanks for putting up with me you are wonderful.

I will try and post some of my pictures latter (the ones that make it past the censer anyway).

Others have said it and if it goes ahead again in the future (it seems that it wont be happening next year may be the year after)
You have just got to find away to go.

Leo you are a wonderful man that has changed so many peoples life's please don't let it end.

An exhausted and emotional

Roger.

Have gone slightly off the schedule as these pictures are from Thursday and Friday, I will put up all the competition pieces from Wednesday later when I get a chance to re-size them. Over the event I took approx 2000 pictures so this is just a small selection of what happened and went on at the best balloon convention in the world.
The first picture is just one of many where the people in green just came into the back of a class and talked and talked and talked with out showing any interest in the class and making it more difficult for the instructors, perhaps others may like to add their own comments of the people in green?
The next two pictures are from Ralph Dewey class;

Things are not always what they appear, this was a breast and neck for a princess that Thelma was making, although we did have fun with other things it possibly did look like  :D
This is an early burlesque artiste, Sally Rand who paid $11000 for a 72" clear balloon to be developed in 1939 and then paid $27 dollars for each balloon bought, so in todays money goodness knows what it would cost.

hmmm - yes.  The only downside of this event was the lack of courtesy shown to the instructors and the audience by some of the green army delegates.  To paraphrase Graham, it is all well and good advertising your company on your clothing, but it also allows everyone to know who you are when you're being disrespectful....

After the gala show the party began with Thelma under the table skyping her husband with the news of her winning the award.
The last picture is of Thelma being ascorted to the Eurostar as while she was celebrating she fell of a 3ft balloon that burst under neath her while she was bouncing around the
room and she has damaged both her knees and could barely walk. It was a challenge getting her home from the event but we managed it with the help of everyone in the group.

Ralph has posted an email on balloonHQ and he has kindly let us post it onto the forum;

I just got back home from attending The Millennium Jam (TMJ) convention in
Belgium.  I want to thank Leo Verlinden, Johan and the IBS staff for all of
their hard work for putting on a SUPER balloon event.  I'm not sure of the
final head count but I'm guessing that it may have been as high as 450 including
staff.  Probably Leo will be posting the actual final count once the dust
settles.  I think that the twisting and decorating skills represented there
were at the highest level.  The classes offered were plentiful and wonderful.
The balloon stage shows that I saw there were fantastic.  The attitude of
sharing ideas and helping each other improve their skills was evident everywhere.
The list of attendees was a who's who list from the balloon world.  The level of
the balloon competition was phenomenal!  As you can tell I'm still pumped by
having attended.  I got a chance to visit with Ted and Betty Vlamis from Pioneer
Balloons.  I got a chance to meet Jack Lever of the Balloon Express Co. in
Italy.  He has 42 stores in Italy and brought 40 of his employees to TMJ.
Leo of IBS gave an award for a lifetime of achievement in balloons.  I had the
honor of presenting that award to Patrick Brown.  Patrick was one of the 12
invited to participate in my Twister Think Tank at TMJ.  The balloon ideas that were
produced at the Twister Think Tank were awesome!  The TMJ jam room was
wonderful and full of balloon "eye candy".  In fact, I discovered lots of new balloon
ideas in the jam room just by stepping over "balloon cadavers" on the
floor.  Once I get my sleep cycle back in order, I'll have a lot of new ideas to
tinker with and develop.  I'll have more to share about the convention later, but
all that I can say is if you weren't at TMJ, "Man, you missed a great balloon
event!"

This is Luca, Willie Monroe's little boy who had a great time throwing this sculpture about, the bubble balloon had helium inside and so it just floated and Luca was throwing it around and even got it stuck up in a tree. He was laughing away and it was a joy to see him having so much fun with, this is what balloons are about!!

I'm in a hotel room in Weinheim, Germany and also wanted to add my voice to all those who attended Mjam. If you didn't come and you don't have an excuse apart from money or time worries, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU MISSED! I drove from Ireland to attend, some people came from Russia, Japan or Mexico having to pay for their trips (obviously I'm not counting teachers) and that should show you how important this event is for your creative juices to flow and to show you things you didn't believe possible with balloons. Although I didn't win any awards (no surprise) just attending it's a prize on itself for your business and your attitude to this wonderful latex thing we're blessed to work with.

Graham, we talked about the 'green army' in private and you know what I said already. But for me the most important thing is that if you're representing a company, your own actions will speak for that company and frankly, those actions have put me off attending Baci for a while. I spoke to a group from Lithuania who went to Mjam and took part in the fairytale dress competition. They have over 20 shops in that country and the people who attended were a the owner couple, their child and the employee who almost single-handedly weaved the tinkerbell costume (an incredible piece of art whose bad luck was having to compete for just one prize with Rie & Sophie's joint piece). I'm now sure that these people will show new techniques and ideas to the rest of their employees. These other company should have done the same, since many of their work colleagues were not interested in twisting or mingling with any others than themselves, and they prevented a very talented twister of winning one of the most coveted competitions in our industry.

Thelma, I was not aware of your injury since I left the jam room earlier. I hope you get back soon to delight us with your designs. Now I'm on my way to Stuttgart for the Autumn fair, where I hope to relive some great moments with other great balloon modellers. I hope I can take some pictures and post them in your forum.

God bless you all x

I got back home ok on Friday.  I had to stop at a service station on the way because I got drowsey so I bought a coffee.  I fell flat on my face twice in the short distance from my car to the costa coffee and once in the actual coffee place.  Someone actually stepped over me.  I wonder if they thought I was drunk.  Anyway it was embarassing and painful.  I had to go home because I had two parties today.  I told the clients that I would still come if they brought all my stuff in for me and lifted anything I needed such as my music equipment.  I told the children that I was walking funny due to an incident involving a balloon and an elephant and three clowns with a pump.  It made them laugh anyway.  I think when I arrived and my clients saw the state of me they didnt expect a good party so when they did get one they were very pleased.  Trust me to do this on a busy weekend!!!!

It was nice to see Tony Twist always smiling from ear to ear and Roger always looking excited and happy.  It was also nice to meet Neil who is a gentleman.  Dave is a total chatterbox. :)  I also met Olivia.  Olivia it was very nice to meet you.

About the green mob.  I think they were a disgrace to their company.  If I had people bearing the name of my company acting the way they did I would be furious.  Also I would like to point out that they have soiled the spirit of the event.  For all the years that this particular competition has been run there has never been any bias to anyone solely on the fact of where they come from and who they represent.  All that political crap is left behind when people enter the millennium jam.  In the MJ all nationalities are friends and are one community.  Or am I being nieve?  If people like this are allowed to carry on in this way it will be like that stupid eurovision song contest where the vote is never about the quality of the act but about which country is in good favour with its neighbours.  Shame on anyone who would make a mockery of the Millennium Jam.  There were some lovely models produced in that competion - it is a pity non of them won.

As for the lack of respect in the workshops from these people - well I think that is just another indication of the mentality of these people.

I am always in awe of the quality of the work produced by Ria and Sofie and it was great to see them working together on the mian competion piece.  It was stunning
The quality of many of the other entries was also wonderful,.  I just oooed and ahhhed my way round it.

I'm glad that you were able to make your shows, despite the obvious pain you are in.  Many congratulations on your thoroughly deserved honour, and thank you for your compliment

It's time for me to share my MJ experience.

Unfortunately, I was working till wednesday so I was there for only one day but ...what a day !!!

The robes and others sculptures exposed in the entry hall where just amazing and gave me a first taste of what my day will be :D

It began with Ralph Dewey's lecture about great balloon design and it was a great feelin' to be there learning new models with such a prestigiious teacher :) After this, I discovered the Jamming room and... I was very impressed by this atmosphere. All those guys twisting together and all the sculptures laying evrywhere, on the tables or on the ground. Wherever I was looking, I saw great designs and great ideas. After a small turnaround to have a look at the models exposed, I approached the balloon tables and was totally excited by all these balloons available. I took some and start twisting and it was great. There, I also met some people I knew from the french balloon forum and it was nice to put an on their nicknames :) After a few hours of twist, it was time to go to my second lecture, Patrick Brown's balloon displays. It was really interresting and I learn a lot of new ideas to give much more impact to my sculptures when showing them.

It was time for a quick meal (I forgot to eat till there) before goin' to the closing gala. This was also a great time seeing all these talented people on scene and what a laugh !!! After the show came the awards well deserved by the winner.

Finally, as I realised that our dear host Graham was sitting at the table right next mine and decided to introduce myself :) It was a great pleasure and excitement to meet you and all the talented people you introduced me. Thanks for this !

It was already midnight and time to get back home with plenty of great souvenirs in my head.

To conclude, this day at MJ was an awesome experiment and I won't forget it. It's been a real boost to me, learning new techniques and fiding a lot of new ideas. I love to think that perhaps one day I may be one of those guys awarded there and I'll work hard for that. I discovered a new world populated by passionate people and I think I have my place in this.

I am now waitin for the next MJ and I hope I can be there for the entire event to share a lot more with everyone.

See you then...

All done with I think 426 pictures posted of the 2000 that I took over the full event, would be nice to see others posting their pictures and thoughts on the whole event and experiences of the week. I think I will still need a few more days to catch up on sleep as I have had a few shows this weekend and then getting ready for the lecture day tomorrow with Mark Byrne in Banstead.

Couple of questions.

What made this better than before (Qualatex sponsoring?)

As it appears it was so successful this year why is it not going ahead next year?

I would have thought now is the time to take advantage of this years success.

The event has always been sponsored, the event has always been fantastic, the event has always been succesful, it grows due to the talent and advancement of twisting. Each year the skill level increases and what makes the event..........possibly the people attending, there is nothing better than a group of twisters getting together and sharing freely. You can feel the love people have for each other no matter what nationality or language barrier there may be.

Quote from: "moonshine"I'm in a hotel room in Weinheim, Germany and also wanted to add my voice to all those who attended Mjam.

I am just coming back down to earth after one of the best experiences of my life. Wow, where do I start? I would like to thank all who made this trip a memorable one and I made some great new friends. Well done to all the organisers, lecturers, people back stage and front of house. I have gained so much knowledge and have already started to put new techniques learnt into practice. I can't wait until the next time. I hope to see you all again soon.

I am just getting back into normal routine after MJ10. What a great occasion and so many fantastic memories. I learnt loads and was truly gob smacked by all the talent and innovation. On top of all that, I met new friends and old all surrounded by lots of lovely balloons! Then to further "Ice the cake" For those that don't know Mike (Twistopher) and I then went on afterwards to visit my Aunt and 3 cousins and their children who live in Brussels. I got to meet baby Oscar, my newest "1st cousin removed" , or "nephew" as I call him, it sounds so much nicer!
On the minus side, Mike went down with flu on the Saturday and has been pretty poorly since. I hope nobody else caught it!
Thelma, I was not aware that you hurt yourself till I read it here. I hope that you are quite recovered now. (Was it the highly amusing but possibly dangerous  balloon "Space hopping" that you inovated?!! I had aching thighs for a few days after but thankfully nothing worse!)

Many congratulations to all the competition and award winners and many thanks to Leo and his team for once more putting on an excellent event. I do hope that it was not the last.

I am still sorting photos but will post some ASAP, I don't want to post duplicates to any already here.

I actually got the tip from Dale on the MBD2 forum //http://www.mbd2.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5036 on how to "paste" photos rather than upload them.  You do have to have the photos already uploaded on the web though so could be on facebook, gallery or any web site. The best thing is you don't need to resize the photo either! :D  :D  :D
By trial and error I found that It works slighly different here in that you click on the img button and paste the  URL code of the photo that you wish to link. (To find the code, right click on the photo and click "properties" Copy the code from "Address:URL" )
Hope this makes sense!
OOOH!  :geek:  :ugeek: I feel quite geeky!!
As you say, I managed to add 12 photos in post, I don't know if there would be a limit?

Feel free Graham if you want to move this post to a more suitable thread , if you think it will be useful to others.

Thanks for the info Christine, I think I'll copy it to the how to post pictures thread but leave your original post here as well.
So if the URL is copied from another location on the web, if you then take those pictures down or move them will the forum pictures disappear as well?

Not sure on that,  I suppose that would be so. Best not to post anything that you intend to move or take down just incase. Anyone have a definitive answer to this?
