Title: Agent taking the mick?
Post by: LizzyB on November 03, 2010, 10:16:47 PM
Received a text today from a promotions company asking for a balloon modeller and a face painter this weekend. Working both Saturday and Sunday, 10-4 and they're offering £216 for the face painter and £240 for the balloon modeller. That's for the two days, not one.

I didn't even bother to answer as it was just insulting.

There is a topic in the private section on this agent and a quite shall I say heated discussion on the face painting forum too. Much to say thoughts and comments have already been made

I also know other agents and promotion companies upset by the rates offered from this company too.

But they can compete in a free market and offer rates they feel entertainers will accept...

If we all say NO they will have no performers... But in these times those with no work will do it.

Yes the other discussions were very good reading, let's say someone has no work and with £240 on offer you should clear £200 profit for six hours work with breaks you would be on £20 an hour for the two days. So if someone really has had no work in for a while you can see that they will find someone at theses prices. Not saying it's right but you should look up the discussions on facepainting chat as it got me thinking.

Here it is:- http://www.facepaintingchat.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=26238 (http://www.facepaintingchat.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=26238) This was the main one but there was another running at the same time along the same theme but that was more about shorter jobs i.e. 2 hours for £30 type ones.  I'll have a look and see if I can find it as I have commented on both

Pain in the butt, I have to register first before I can read it and now have to wait for them to acknowlege me!

I had a call yesterday from a promotion company about Balloon Modelling this weekend 9-6 on Sat, 11-4 on Sunday, I told them what I wanted per day and got it.  However because it's short notice I did quote them a discounted fee as long as I can hand out my own cards.

Novembers always a slow month for me, and It's like Graeme said in his post, if you're not working it's best to go out for a bit less than your normal fee and earn something, rather than being stuck at home earning nothing.

however I'm getting more per day, than the company that contacted you was offering for both days. Maybe thats because I didn't ask them what they were offering just told them what I wanted.

Seems back to front to me...Holidays cost more the nearer you get to the day... Care & share days cost more as you get nearer to the day.

Would have thought you had a bigger bargaining power as they need  something urgent that you could supply.

Maybe so fuzzy, I did get the idea they were willing to pay what I asked because they were runnning out of options, however I put my need for the money before the chance toget as much as I could, and gave them a discounted fee to ensure I got the gig.

It's not just down to the money, I've now got two days in ASDA where I can hand out loads of cards, instead of 2 days at home bored stiff earning nothing.

Mind you instead of being able to do my own thing I have to do Mario themed balloons, if anyones got any good mario balloons they wouldn't mind sharing i'd be very grateful. my email address is magic@emazdad.co.uk. I can do a Mario, but as I've never played the game I don't know what other charactors are popular. Thanks in advance.

I haven't designs but the other Mario characters shouldn't be too hard to do in balloons:

Yoshi - a green dinosaur, sometimes with a red baseball hat

Princess Peach - a pink princes with yellow hair (snow white done in pink would come close)

Luigi - same as Mario, but change the blue in yours for green + green cap.

Toad - nothing like a toad - a sort of Mushroom with legs.

Birdo
- a sort of pink dinosaur with a red hair bow

You would probably also get asked for Bowser - a Green prickly turtle thing with t-rex head. - this would have me very stumped

there many are others, but i am informed these are the main ones

Have fun

I just have a quick question about this as my understanding may be wrong but surely if you work for an agent you can't actually give out your own promotional material.

It's the promotion company thats booked me, not an agent, and handing out my own cards is part of the deal for them getting the discounted price.

Cheers Mark, I've come up with a couple of ideas but with only 24 hours notice, plus lots of other stuff going on times been against me. I've a mario hat idea as well which will hopefully go down well.

Well if it's anything like the "Shrek" themed day I painted for at my local Asda a few years back the staff knew nothing about it and were all dressed as super heroes! I ended up painting no Shrek faces just my usual ones!

Hi YvonneH, I don't think this will be like that, I Got back from working at a firework display last night to find an email with all the details about this event, it's not organised by ASDA it's organised by nintendo.

part of the summary was a bit detailing everyones roles including mine which made me laugh, i don't need to be told how to do my job, but obviously they have employed people in the past that did.

Role: Balloon Modeller
•Arrive on time
•Interact with the consumers and generate excitement in the sampling area
•Where possible, model balloons in front of the kids so they can see how they are made and then distribute
•Be professional, welcoming and friendly to all consumers at all times

To be fair I suppose the money they try to get away with paying is so low they probably do get a lot of people who haven't got a clue what they are doing.  Good luck mate and do post some piccies.

That is unusual!  Sorry but the general jist of the conversation was that instead of going out and making it harder for others to earn enough to make a living out of this that people should consider doing promo jobs etc for the same money as is being offered.  This way they are still earning something but they are not devaluing what they do as their day job.

I would prefer to do that as there are too many people round here who do very cheap face painting and balloons and I prefer to be able to say "Yes I am a lot more than others (whoever they mention) but I am also very good at what I do so I am worth it!".  If people see good and experienced twisters going out to work for peanuts because they are desperate for the money when the recession ends they will struggle to get their rates up again.

I have dropped my price slightly but had been thinking about this for a while.  Although Herts is an affluent county, my town isn't and I was travelling so far for work.  I would much rather take a slightly lower paying job on my doorstep than I would drive for an hour each way for my old rate.  Since doing so my jobs have increased significantly in the local area to where I had 3 jobs last weekend all within 5 miles of my house.  I can't remember the last time I had that.

Well the day went really well, the guy did try and get me to where a Mario tee shirt, which I refused to do, 1, they booked Emazdad not some bloke to do balloons and my shirt and waistcoat are what I work in. 2, I don't work in short sleeves because I have tattoos, which is the reason I gave him for not doing it.

Mind you I don't think they had a tee shirt that would have fitted me.

I made loads of Marios, Louigis (Mario with green instead or red) power up stars, Bowser the dragons and princes peach's.

Sorry Mark, it wasn't bowser it was Yoshi. I've put the picture in a new topic in the picture gallery. I made him mostly with 260's, the one I've posted was a one off I made last night out of 350's. I'll post it here as well for you.
