Few questions
« on: August 07, 2014, 06:17:00 PM »
I am considering contacting a few local schools to see there are any fairs in the future I may be able to twist at. This in itself shouldn't be a problem as I am a peripatetic music teacher and visit lots of local junior schools and have a good relationship with them. At a fair like this should I go with fixed price per balloon attitude or more of a busking 'leave what you can' attitude? Is being a member of equity a must? Or will public liability insurance be enough? Finally, is anyone aware if there is a 'one size fits all' PLI for entertainers? Reason being I'm going to start doing hypnosis soon and rather than paying out for lots of PLI premiums I would (obviously) like to find one that covers being an entertainer.

Thanks in advance.

At a school, I would go for a fixed amount per balloon as kids tend to only put a few pence in if busking. If the parents are there as well they might put in more.
The best idea is to have the school pay you your usual fee. Failing that have them pay you a small amount, then you charge per balloon.

Equity I think would be the way to go, I have been with them a few years, had one problem with a production company and non payment and within 4 hours of calling equity it was all paid and sorted. With a few choice words from the production company down the phone to me but I had waited nearly a year for payment. Busking is always a little hit and miss, I used to do it occasionally a few years back now and if you got £15/20 an hour that was good but it's the contacts you make that is the main reason for getting out there and have people see your work.
