Title: March Competition (Shield & Sword)
Post by: Graham Lee on February 27, 2016, 12:14:21 PM
The March competition will be a two balloon shield and a variation on a sword,
with the slightly more difficult models we have been getting between 6 and 10 entries a month.
Although we do send out many more orders than this, so seeing if people would join in and prefer a simpler model.

So the complimentary packs will be sent out with all orders and the competition closes on the 7th April.
If you post your attempt you will go into the draw to win a balloon modelling DVD.

If you do not buy from us.............no problem please have a go just for fun and I hope the design will be of help to you.

This is what we are aiming for, I build the shield using both balloons.
It makes it a lot easier than one at a time but a little more difficult to explain.

Inflate the first 260 leaving 3 fingers un-inflated, make a 2 finger bubble followed by a 5/6 finger bubble.
(The size od this bubble will vary the look of the shield so perhaps try a 5 finger and 6 finger and see what you prefer)

Then twist a second 5/6 finger bubble and twist around the 2 finger bubble.

Then make two more 5/6 finger bubbles and twist back around the 2 finger bubble.

Inflate your second 260 for the shield and again leave 3 fingers un-inflated, make two 2 finger bubbles.
I then twist the knot over the top of this section while twisting one of the two bubbles to make my two pinch twists.
You can just make two single 2 finger bubble pinch twists.

Slide the second balloon through one of the 5/6 finger side sections of the shield.

Then push the second balloon through the other side section of the shield.

Push the air along a little in this balloon to make it a little softer here, you will need three more twists made into this balloon.

Make a 3 finger bubble in the bottom of the second 260 and twist into the two 2 finger pinch twists.

If you push the top curved section of the second balloon together you will get a crease in the balloon to show where the centre is.
Picture 13

Make a 4 finger bubble in the first 260 balloon and wrap this over the centre crease of the second 260 balloon.

Make another 4 finger bubble and wrap the 260 around the 2 finger bubble in the centre of the shield.

You then have to divide the last section of the balloon up so you have a 2 finger bubble left at the end,
my longer bubble is approx. 7/8 fingers and this gets twisted into the bottom two pinch twists.

Make the 2 finger bubble in the end of the balloon.

Twist this last 2 finger bubble around the centre section of the shield to hold it all in place.
You then have to make a 4 finger bubble in the second outer balloon on both sides above where the two 4 finger bubbles are,
from balloon one.

I then pull the sides of the shield over so they fit snugly in between the two 5/6 finger side bubbles.
These 5/6 finger bubbles can be exactly horizontal or you could make them slightly lower than horizontal.
This will change the shape and look of the shield, this is what I like about this design, it gives you options.

A few variations when I was trying to see the easiest way to explain the construction, every shield looks a little different.
I do like that, if you try different size bubble for the sides of the T section you will get a few different looks.

The sword, inflate a 260 leaving 4 fingers un-inflated.

Make a 6 finger bubble for the handle, then three bubbles that are approx. 2.5 fingers.
Twist the last bubble around the handle twist.

You then have to make three more 2.5 finger bubbles and again twist around the handle section,
twist a couple more times than you think so it does not come un-done.

Then make the last three 2.5 finger bubbles and wrap into the handle twist one more.

You have a slightly different looking sword.

Here are the finished sword and shield. I hope they come in handy when you are out and about twisting.

Please post away, it will be nice to see a few variations and the draw fro the DVD will take place on the 8th April.
The competition closes on the 7th April.
All entries go into the hat.

I also turned the shield into a spaceship, guitar, violin, bird and aeroplane. It's on the evolving shield thread here,

OOOPS!

I forgot to mention about the knot at the back of the shield.
You can either just leave it or make it into a pinch twist to hide,
I must have been too keen to post all the instructions earlier.
