I had this problem, unwittingly, yesterday.
I was working a busy market selling my baby clothes and to entertain the customers kids I made a few simple models. It wasn't long before there was a small queue of kids waiting for balloons. The market was coming to an end, the wife was dealing with the last of the customers and it was time to get cleared up.
I gave the last half a dozen kids a balloon each and told them I had things to do, but, if they could bring the balloons back when they've blown them up I would make them a model. Not one of them came back, or if they did, I was long gone :D

I have a clock which shows what time I'm stopping at and I verbally announce 15-20 minutes before my scheduled end time, anyone left in line at that time I simply explain that I have another engagement and cannot stay any longer.  You always get the ones that are angry because they have waited in line.  I tell them they are welcome to take my card and book me for their own event but that my paid time is done here and I can't be late for my next appointment.  I find this usually works, if it doesn't I offer to give the child an uninflated round balloon, hand them a balloon, then start packing up my stuff.

No matter what you do, you will, from time to time, get that person who insists on calling you crude names and making themselves a wonderful example (sarcastic eye roll) for their children.  I've learned you can't take any of this personally, as there are people in this world who are just plain old idiots. :)

I never leave before I have finished my line.  If I have to work longer - then it's my problem for not closing the line earlier.

I have a self-inking stamp with my name and a balloon doggie on it.  I stamp all those in line when I'm closing, then no one can jump in line - it's free advertising on their skin  ;)
Kids who come late can often be satisfied with just the stamp.
Just my 2 cents

I know that this is an old thread but I've only just joined.

I wrote this blog after having a really bad end to a day's twisting.  (A guy wrote some really slanderous stuff about me on his Facebook page. However the threat of legal action sorted him out.)

I hope you find it interesting.

I was a facepainter first before I became addicted and twisted so I do the line check at 20-30 min before end time. I tell them they are the last ones as I have to go to my next party or event. Everyone gets a simple balloon. I agree there will still be whiners, mini tantrums and verbally aggressive parents on occasion (I hear and feel Patricia B's lament). I really need to incorporate the "treat and run" . I like the glow sticks, little tattoos, or uninflated balloon. Wyndy O
