September 2009 - Jams, Lectures, Balloon Gatherings

Jams, Lectures and Balloon Gatherings

I realise this topic has been covered slightly before, (November 2008) but I am interested in a different aspect this time.....

What do you get out of going to Jams, Lectures and Balloon Gatherings?
(I am including a few friends around to jam, the Care & Share days, and the Big organised international jams like TMJ and Diamond Jam.)

How often do you go?

How do you choose which ones to go too?

what is the best thing about them?

Please feel free to discuss anything about this topic that may not be answered in the above questions!

Danny yet another great topic, you do come up with some good ones  :)
I'll try and put down what I get from them but at some I'm on both sides of the fence as to what a supplier is hoping to get from the days as well. So this will give me something to think and ponder over.

What do you get out of going to Jams, Lectures and Balloon Gatherings?

Mainly Ideas,  no matter how good you are, or how long you've been doing it you always come away learning something new. If it's not a new model, it's a handy piece of business advice or crowd control.

How often do you go?

Whenever Me and Billy are both off and there's one we fancy going to. Unfortunatley that means I get to about one a year.

How do you choose which ones to go too?

Usually ones a bit further away where there are different people around as opposed to the same old local faces.

what is the best thing about them?

It's a nice day out and It's a chance to meet people who all have the same interest, and to find out how others work. I like meeting up with friends who you only see at these things. unfortunatly because we choce the ones further away we don't always get to stay for the meal afterwards.

I love getting to jams as I always come away buzzing with all the new info ... although I probably forget most of what I learn before I even leave.

I don't get to many jams or events as I have 2 small kids and not many people to look after them for me.  This year it has been even worse due to commitments and I have yet to make a since organised event but at least Roger and I had a bit of a jam a couple of months ago!

to answer my own questions!....

What do you get out of going to Jams, Lectures and Balloon Gatherings?

Most of the time at the moment I'm a solo performer so it pleases me to be around other twisters, talking and sharing the same problems, solutions and exchanging ideas. I like seeing complex things like dresses that I personally (at the moment) don't make. And seeing new techniques in action.

How often do you go?
As often as money and time will allow.

How do you choose which ones to go too?
Have I heard of the twister? Do I know their work already? Can I get to the venue without it costing me a fortune? Am I available?
I'm booked to go to TMJ for the third time as it is a brilliant Balloon Jam and its in Belgium which is really not very far away.

what is the best thing about them?
Learning new models and techniques, meeting like minded people, seeing new products like books and DVD's, being able to try new balloon types/colours/shapes, and of course meeting people off this forum!

Here are some of my thoughts on the subject but just re-reading it there is so much more that the jams, days, conventions, events and balloon entertaining mean to me. So if you want to know more then catch me sometime and I'm more than happy to bend your ear and tell you all the wonderful useless information I have and know about this lovely art form that we call balloon modelling that I'm so in love with.

So what do I get from the days?

Lot’s! The companionship within our industry/community is unlike any other, the majority of people that are all so eager and willing to share.
You could be anywhere in the world and if you had a problem, just look for another balloon artiste as they will be more than willing to help you out.

I started going to the millennium jam with David Grist and it changed my life, to this day I find going to this event is a very emotional experience for myself that sometimes I just need to be left alone with my thoughts.

Some may say now that I do the care and share days to sell balloons and make a profit while promoting Sempertex, this is far away from reality. I do the days as I have a love and passion for latex, the days would go ahead even if sponsorship was not available for them. Not as often admittedly but we would try and run six throughout the year, the pride I feel when I see people at various events throughout the year getting better and better with there twisting skills is just great to see and it’s also nice that some now even run there own days to pass on our art form. It doesn’t matter how many models you can make as long as what you can make, you must make well, this is a must which I feel very strongly and passionate about.

I like to get to at least one a month to get my fix although I do try and have a session with Thelma as often as we both can make it as well; you get so much more when ideas are bounced around between others as some look at things from a completely different angle and viewpoint from you.

I don’t mind what ones I attend, I’ve even been known to attend some from another manufacturer, never I here you say. No I have been to them….honest.

I like the social gathering side of things as well with the meals after when you do really get to know people this way.
The way our art form is growing at the moment is fantastic, I’m really proud and honoured to be a part of it.
